Any clues to what caused this

I have had much success with planting trees and shrubs in and around the yard. Offered winter protection to many (this one included that was just planted last year) since we had that arctic air move in for the past three winters. Though last winter was mild...it was still offered just using precaution for if we had it occur again.

There are NO leaves on the mature branch structure. It appears to have new growth only coming from the grafted trunk. Very disappointing...when we chose this tree for its structure.

Sent an an email photo to the nursery. They are going to look into why this happened. But...it's sickening...I have had success in my landscape other than losing a rysen to arctic cold. Having it in the yard for a few years before the arctic cold moved in. Now this replacement turns out to be a dud...

I have experience in bonsai as well...so a green thumb. I slow watered this tree in. It never showed any signs of stress from planting. Thrived from the day it was purchased and planted...went into fall looking just fine.
