I had the same thing happen to a bunch of moreira cardoso seeds (with a bit of H2O2 in the water as well) this past early spring. 1 or 2 out of a batch of ten seeds had the same problem and ended up turning to mush but all the others were ok and growing quite well.

Hi Kristi,

I don't see any red roots on my seedlings but I have some that have just a bulblet and a red spot where the roots should start. I remember that I had similar seedlings last year. I planted them together with the others but I can't say whether they survived or not.

I'm just using normal tap water.

I also had some seeds that were actually red when the black shell cracked open in water. Some of them germinated but the seedlings look strange.

Several years ago when I made my first papilio cross that ended up with PapExStasy, I had several seedlings with reddish roots like you seem to have. As all else with these seedlings appeared normal I potted them up (about 4 I guess) and labeled tha4 pot with the red roots.

Today these seedlings are still growing, haven't bloomed but neither have the rest of that batch other than one. They were OK I guess so if it's a great cross and you don't want to loose any of the seedlings, give it a try. Just label them for future reference.

They are the bright red/white H. Gordie self X H. Papilio crosses. Growing like weeds, but red roots in water.

How many are you soaking and are they all red? If you don't have many of these seeds then I'd give them every chance but if you've got many more, maybe you could try soaking another batch in rain water instead of your tap water which I assume you're using. That should be a great cross and produce gorgeous flowers, good luck with them!!
