Is there a particular shade of BM white recommended?

I love to paint the ceiling a 50% reduction of the wall color, if the wall isn't too dark.

Thanks, Rockin' -- the local BM color consultant said just go with ceiling white. But I'm looking at my ceilings (and the ceiling in her store which has ceiling white as well) and it's rather dull. I like both the whites you suggested much better - thanks for the suggestions.

Ceiling white looks like skimmed milk. Either paint them your woodwork color or something soft lik BM cotton balls.

Chantilly will be yellow and white dove has a blueish undertone.

I took another look, and the whites Rockin' suggested might be a bit bright for my taste. Thinking about marble white or calming cream. Walls will be a deep blue - still vascillating between narragansett green, hale navy, at the midnight hour, newburg green...don't care for yellow at all and prefer to avoid bluish tone to avoid the coolness - also don't want the blue and white to look too nautical or preppie...going for soothing but with some crispness? Am trying to coordinate the main color with the poster in the attached image...

I've often done my ceilings the same as my trim work, but in a flat finish, BM cloud white

I have better things to do than look at ceilings.

    Paint it white.

If ceiling white is skimmed milk, then cotton balls is whole milk! Thinking about one shade darker than cloud white - white down......Rickin - what is Oc-37?

I'll try looking it up again on the BM site, Rockin' - Aja, you made me laugh. Truth is, though, it takes me a while to get out of bed and I DO end up looking at the ceiling - when I'm relaxing on the couch in the livingroom, too..and hey, aren't you affected by the color of the sky? Ceilings are our interior skies....so why not figure out the most pleasing shade?

I did mine in BM Dove white as well as the crown molding in BM dove white and I am glad I did not paint it the wall color as the builder said was free. I had to pay 450 dollars for the ceiling of BM White Dove but I am so happy with my decision.

Dove White is a warm color with a hint gray not blue

Ceilings are now the new territory in design - you can add wallpaper, change the tone of your paint from the walls to add height, go glitzy high end with metallic inks - its about having a master design scheme that makes sense to you and fits in with your scheme adding to the overall affect.

If your ceilings are only 8' high, I don't recommend going with bold colours or wallpapers -

My favorite whites are Benjamin Moore Decorator white and General Paint Mistaya - flat finish of course.

Visuals of how to add texture and personality to your ceilings - which, add personality and final all important details to a space. Good Luck with your project!

I think having wood on the ceiling adds warmth. Something similar to your bed?

And, as far as I'm concerned, the ceiling is the 5th wall. Why leave it white? I have not one white ceiling in my home. Most are the same or a lighter shade as the wall. Vaulted ceiling in family room is papered in white/beige mattress ticking stripe. Just nice to have a little interest up there!

Love the discussion about ceiling treatments - happen to like blue and white, and I think the room will benefit from a light ceiling...so appreciate the feedback re: favorite whites...Marie, I LOVE the design you did portrayed in the top left photo..

Aside from ceiling height, how much sunlight the room gets should affect the whole white ceiling vs. colored ceiling decision. Any color, even a diluted one, really darkens a room if you live in a place with very little sunlight and mostly rainy grey skies like I do. I had one room in the last house in the palest of yellows on the ceiling and it was still considerably darker than the rooms with white ceilings.

So I'm personally sticking with white ceilings as long as I live in this wonderful 280 days of rain a year city.

I am actually in Brazil, but we definitely have a Seattle / London situation going on with the weather.

Must resist the urge to decorate in lots of plaid (what is it with rainy cities and plaid?).

    Consider BM Silver Cloud.

Glossy paint on a ceiling can really help to bounce the light from a fixture around a room.

We did cloud white and love it.

I went with White Dove in the bathroom and like it very much (it seems very similar to cloud white - both soft, warm whites)...Thanks everyone, for all the input. Still deciding on trim and doors - will probably stay with white dove in different finish - I really like the color and I think it will be appropriately unifying for my 1 bedroom apartment with 8 foot ceilings (each room is a different color - white kitchen, light tan dining room, blue living room, gray bathroom, and blue and white bedroom) -

I think you CAN go wrong with BM Dove White on a ceiling. I blithely said to do all the ceilings with it and just noticed how yellow it looks next to the white tiles and silver grout in my bathroom. Big mistake!

Just so you know, Benjamin Moore’s White Dove and Dove White are not the same color.
