What kind of tree is this? How much sun does it require?

    Last fallo we planted a tree in my father's memory. Sadly the deer feasted on it over the winter. Adding a wind chime will hopefully deter the deer but more importantly remind me of my father.

      This tree is a Magnolia soulangeana and it likes full sun (sun at least 3/4 of the day).

      This tree is a Saucer Magnolia (not a true Magnolia- not an evergreen) also called a 'big leaf' magnolia. They get pretty big but are the first trees to bloom in spring.

      It's a Jane Magnolia - they bloom before they leaf out in the spring (as shown here) and bloom again mid-year when covered in dark green leaves.

      I have a very small Jane magnolia that I bought at Kmart this spring...still in the container. How long does it take to grow? I have a spot that needs something to attain it's mature height in about 10 yrs.

      Can you plant this magnolia next to a Patio? Do the roots grow sideways or downwards?
