Fig tree cut at base :-((((( ***HELP***

last modified: 10 years ago

Hello everyone,

Our beautiful fig tree was cut at the base (this was a horrible mistake and we were heart broken when we've found out). There is about 5cm left of the base.

Is there any way to save it? Will new shoots grow back? How long should it take for new shoots to start appearing if any!?

I have also been reading about new cuttings. Managed to get few branches from the cut tree and will definitely try to use those. Some of the cut branches have fruit on them. Does that make a difference?

Also been reading about grafting. Any suggestions? Is the base high enough for that?

What is the best approach?

Don't know when the tree was planted. I would say 4-5 years ago most likely. It was already in the garden when we moved.

We had our doubts about the fruit production because last year the fruit was small, not fully ripped and thus not edible. We thought it was mostly because the tree was overcrowded by other trees around. When we moved in we've trimmed the other trees around it to allow the fig to grow and get the sun light it needed. We were waiting to see this summer if the fruit was getting better....guess will have to wait much much longer now.... :-'(

any advice is welcomed! Please help!

thank you all
