The availability of some new cultivars and species of Aucuba within the last decade or so seems to have generated a renewed interest in otherwise common plant used extensively throughout the South and Mid-Atlantic.
I really like this particular Aucuba (below), even though it's actually an old cultivar. It has a tropical look to it more than others, in my opinion. A large mature plant is a sight to behold.
Aucuba japonica 'Limbata' (aka 'Sulphurea Marginata') is a slower grower, so you're not going to find it in the Big Box stores and probably will be hard to locate anywhere but some mail order nurseries.
It might need just a bit more shade than other cultivars, to prevent the leaf edges from burning. But once my plants got some mass to them, that seemed to be less of an issue.
