The article doesn't move the bar for me because it speaks in theories, generalities and with very few specifics. It does mention a real world application of seed meal fertilizer/amendments, but doesn't speak to why they thought that would be the right thing to do or why it was even a good idea. Why was that specific seed meal used over other seed meals, manures or other organic matter? This seems like a major omission. The accompanying photo shows the seed meal being scattered on the soil surface and not tilled in (no til fans can applaud).

MrClint, I believe that it is a fact that mustard and like brassica seeds and green plants tilled into the soil do inhibit some bad things in the soil. I did sprinkle some mustard meal in melon soil this year, but did not have ways near the amount used in the picture.

My take-away from the article is the importance of diversity in soil biology. I don't think that the seed meal was a magic ingredient so much as it was a variation from what they had been using before. It is the opposite of mono-culture and sticking with the same fertilizer year after year.
