I don't do anything different that I could spot with the sound off, except cutting with a knife. I usually snap the roots apart like a piece of celery. It didn't say if the cut leaves were dried at all before potting up, but I usually do let them dry overnight.

I couldn't tell if anything was done wrong, but it was an interesting video... Makes want to go "propagate" hahaha!!

One thing I noticed is that he cut the green Hahnii leaves in half to propagate, then didn't pot the tops, only the bottoms. Best to leave the tops on the leaves, more energy in the leaf to produce offsets. Dr. Juan Chahinian explains in one of his books that a leaf with it's top will produce more and stronger offsets than a leaf that's had the top cut. Tops and bottoms will produce plants, but both are weaker than an entire leaf. Plus the more you cut the more chance of rot.

I usually pot offsets right away if they're not rare or difficult. I'd be more careful in letting the cut end dry with rare or unusual types. So I don't have a problem with the fellow in the video cutting and potting immediately.

I don't know why he didn't take variegated leaves to propagate, you'd get the same green offsets as you would from the green non-variegated leaves.

You can also sometimes get multiple generations of offsets from a good, strong leaf, especially cylindrical types with thick leaves. Lots of stored energy in those thick, dense leaves.

After the leaf produces some offsets, take those off and repot the leaf again with fresh mix, and fertilize. It will produce another round of offsets. If the leaf is still green and strong, repot the leaf for the 3rd round. The leaf will eventually turn yellow and will be spent. This is another reason to leave the leaf intact, uncut and strong.

Interesting about whole leaves vs cut leaves. The Trifasciata I cut into thirds still has no roots at all; neither in water nor soil. The whole hahnii leaf has water roots. The top Black Gold leaves rooted in soil. Gives credence to your above statements.

Katrina, I have a whole leaf at least a foot and a half long that's rooted in a tall 6" pot. No pups showing yet but I'm expecting at least 3 rounds of offsets from the leaf since it's so large and uncut. So possibly 9 plants from a single leaf, maybe more if it lasts an extra round.

This is a leaf from an unidentified species, GC 78-133. Originally from Grigsby Cactus Gardens, it came with the name Mason Congo but of course that's not correct. Definitely as tall as masoniana, but leaves not as wide.

I'll post pics when I get some pups showing.
