Mardi Gras Plumeria

The blooms are definitely bigger this year despite the beating my plants took in the storms last year.

John, It is absolutely beautiful! If you ever have seeds, please OH please put my name on the list. Would love to have one that bright and beautiful.

Susana, you do know that seeds rarely produce plants that produce blooms resembling those found on the seed-producing parent plant, don't you? There are no seed pods forming on my Mardi Gras this year. This plant was started from a rooted cutting that I bought from 1-stop-Aloha for $34.01 (price included shipping) in August of 2012. I have a number of nurseries listed on my web site that you might check for cuttings. Strange that 1-stop-Aloha is not listed. http://perilloux.net/needful_things.htm/#gardening

Florida Colors is advertising them on their site for $25 plus shipping, but they're out of stock.

Thank you, John, I will definitely check Florida Colors(and also your web page). I planted the seeds you sent me. Nothing yet to post pictures of but I will keep you updated.

Susana, I had never tried planting seeds before but I tried three of the La Jolla Sunset seeds just to see if they would germinate. I folded a wash cloth, wet it and wrang out most of the water, put it in a Tupperware bowl and put the 3 seeds under the first fold of the cloth. I sprayed the cloth with a spray bottle every morning, and the seeds had begun germinating by the 5th day. I now have them in a mixture of 1 part potting soil and 2 parts Perlite, and they appear to be coming along OK. I'm still spraying them every morning with the spray bottle.

Drop seed in cup of water.

Put cup of water in dark place for 2 days.

Plant seed and water as needed.

Works very well but it's such a crap shoot on type, couple that with how long you have to wait, I have moved away from seeds. I do have one 2 year old seedling with great structure that I have kept. Time will tell.

John, will try it your way next time I get seeds. The ones you sent me were soaked for about an hour and then planted in potting soil with lots of extra perlite. I spray it every morning with water. Will take picture as soon as one pops up.

dupefl, this is the first time I try seeds. John was kind enough to send me some he had and I can't wait to see one come to life. LOL

If those don't work, Susana, I have a few left. Let me know and I'll send them to you.

I am hoping that they will grow but I will let you know either way. Thank you so very much, John. I really appreciate it.

I've have a 'Mardi Gras' ... bought it from Florida Colors. It finally developed an inflo last fall, and then promptly shriveled up and fell off as the days were already too short and cool for it to develop. This will be the third summer I have had it. I was outside tonite watering plants and was pleased to see another inflo developing on it! Am hoping this will be the year I finally have flowers! And what flowers they are from what your photo shows! What's the fragrance like on it?

I don't know, Scott, but apparently the scent is good because my mail lady stops and smells them everyday and says how good they smell. My sense of smell is shot. What are you fertilizing your plant with and how often?

John... I'm using a 10-52-10 fertilizer every other watering.

I'm using almost the same, 10-50-10, and that seems to have done the job. I read somewhere that a 3-1-2 formulation is better. I use Vigoro All-purpose 24-8-16 before inflos appear, and then I switch to 10-50-10. I use that once a week and sometimes use plain water in between because of the heat here.

Are you guys using slow release granular fertilizer?

I'm using Green Thumb Blossom Bloom 10-50-10, 1 tbsp to 1 gallon of water, along with 1 tbsp of epsom salt for each gallon of water. I water once a week with this mixture, and I'm watering with plain water in the middle of the week because of the high temperatures.

this is very interesting to me.

some say a granular 10-20-10 is all you need, like the Excalibur florida color sells and other me swear by a water soluble similar to what you are using.

interested on opinions on this ^^.

Do you have a link to the fertilizer you are using? My quick google search was fruitless. Thanks.

    I believe I bought it at Lowe's.

How long does it take for a cutting to bloom?

Impossible to say, Josh. A rooted cutting could be from a tip that was on the verge of forming an inflo, and bloom shortly after. Or, it could be a lanky cultivar that may take a while. All you can do is be patient. It’s worth the wait.
