When fans are running in every room and I'm wondering why I don't get AC but then the coastal breezes come blowing in....

Despite the high humidity and high temperatures, the wonderful smell of cut grass, flowers in bloom, smell of chlorine poolside, sitting under umbrellas, working in the yard and loosing soooo much water weight, and feeling absolutely wonderful that the sun is shining and all is good! (Dallas/Fort Worth area)

When you see mosquito repellent in strategic places all around the house: by all exits, the grill area, the hammock, the lawn mower, etc.

It's when I retreat to my deck for meals, coffee, glass of wine or beer, with the floral scents from my garden, especially the honeysuckle vines, wafting around me.

In Ohio, our summer mascot is the orange barrel.

When the shade sails come out to shelter the back yard, and all the laundry is bathing suits.

The house is dark inside...because the sun has risen...above the eaves...and the trees are full of leaves.

4H goats in the backyard and chickens in the barn. Watching the kid's baseball games in the heat and humidity. And most of all...the county fair!

Bare feet and lots of time on our patio- from coffee in the morning, to wine at night with the birds chattering away.

When the strawberries come in, the gardenias bloom and the air conditioner comes on.

Around here, summer means the dogs get to be outside everyday, except when it's raining. These dogs, basenjis, love heat, hate rain.

It can be 95 and they are lying out on the deck, in the full sun.

Typical basenis, I placed a puppy with a man who built a tarp covered shelter so his dog would never have to be rained on.

When you step outside and Texas size mosquitos swarm your entire being! Yup that's summer in south Texas.

Apparently this statement doesn't continue to be true when the person/place/thing (noun) leaves Texas, only returning for short visits. However, if things are done in reverse (going from another place to Texas on a permanent basis) even a granola eating, birkenstock wearing long hair having individual will suddenly feel an overwhelming urge for big hair and a man in wranglers + cowboy boots. Judging by the photos my BFF posts. :P I should ask her how she deals with the super sized insects and such...;)

Mosquitos? Did someone say mosquitos? I'm 70-y.o. When I was growing up & we went to my dad's nighttime softball games, we burned kerosene-soaked rags in a coffee can to ward them off. Once I got knocked completely out of an Adirondack chair by one that came in for hard landing on my shoulders. Mosquitos? One reason I put up w/ high taxes in SoCal. In arrid climate, don't have'em.

We have mosquitoes in my 12 minutes-from-your-choice-of-any-one-of-three-beaches location in SoCal, but that's more due to the 'waterscaping' of my gated HOA...

When the sun comes up at 5 am and goes down around 11 pm.

Reading by the pool in the afternoon, and reading in the screen porch in the evening.

lawn sprinklers, tan lines, neighbors out watering with hoses and washing cars, distant sounds of fireworks, lightning bugs, wishing for a thunderstorm to cool things off, steam rising from the street after a light rain, farmers markets, trips to the ice cream parlor, hum of lawnmowers, whine of weed eaters, condensation on sunglasses, peaches and fresh corn

suedonim75--I live in the Dayton area and I know about orange barrel city! I live just a couple of miles from I-75 and the area of the highway going through Dayton has been orange barrel city for at least the last 2 or 3 years. My husband did tell me they are trying to get this work done early before the 2017 deadline, which works for me. If they get done early, the state of Ohio gets a huge rebate!

When the AC & fans run 24/7 & it gets near 120, yep, it's summer in AZ!

When the long seed pods from my neighbors' 2 orchid trees start popping open and leaving sharp-edged "snow drift"-like piles in my driveway (thanks to afternoon breezes), and a zillion seeds try to sprout in the front yard. Oh well...they're beautiful when in bloom...

Blooming flowers, budding trees, and porch swings. I know it is summer when there is colorful Popsicle drips on my porch. When there is bikes, scooters, and skateboards parked in my driveway from visiting neighborhood kids. When there is scraped knees, bug bites, and band aids. Kids are running through sprinklers, blow up pools in the yard, and swimsuits and towels hanging in my bathroom. Evening walks. 20+ hour road trips. Summer night concerts with just a little Malibu Rum:)

When the days are long and busy...life is good. Gardening, entertaining, fireworks, popsicle, watermelon, grilling, birds chirping...yea it is summer, and I love it.

All of the above and cousins, the smell of new mown hay and of course lightning bugs!!!

When we can get to our island cottage on Georgian Bay and spend the days outdoors until the mosquitos come.

When the fireflies hover over the field in the still of the evenings. Oh my!

Little ones with fat little legs chasing fire flies in the dark evening . Their giggles filling the air.

Starry nights, campfires in the backyard, trips to the pool and Kool-Aid.

Soft velvety warm breezes that caress my face with a lover's touch. Birds performing a summer concert with their finely tuned notes. Emerald green cool grass that tickles my shoeless toes. Sun beating to a wild rocky rhythm of pulsating heat and icy iced cubes clinking melodically in my glass, tantalizing me with the promise of cooling refreshment. Ah, summer!

When we get hot water from the "cold" tap and the lows at night don't get below 80, it's summer in Phoenix, no matter what the calendar says. Time to enjoy our pool. And the basil, long beans and Armenian cucumbers in our garden produce some great cool dinners!

@jjnman12 I feel your pain, it's ponytails until fall here and I gave up makeup when it started to melt down my neck. Eyeliner on my cheeks isn't the look I was going for.

The wheat is turning golden in the field, frogs croaking, watermelon in a tub of ice, dinner made with fresh fruit/garden vegetables, family reunions, church picnics, homemade ice cream, county fairs, swinging in the porch swing, catching a nap in the hammock in the shade of the trees, frying fish just caught from the lake, and camping in the great outdoors.

picnics and walks on our nearby beach, getting ready for Christmas etc etc were just past mid winter now ... during under my duvet in the middle of the day cos I can't get warm...
