Some First Blooms

I planted over 20 new roses this past spring but not all of them have bloomed yet. Here are the first blooms from a few roses that have.

Lady Emma Hamilton's early blooms are a very dark peachy orange color but incorporates pink and yellow as it opens.

This rose is in a raised bed at the moment. I could see it was declining after being in the ground a few weeks. I dug it up and found that the roots were deteriorating. I think it really likes super well drained soil. By the end of winter, my amended heavy clay soil can be challenging for some roses like LEH.

LEH's fragrance withstood nearly 100 degree temps yesterday!

I was always intrigued by Belle Story but by the time I decided to buy it, DA discontinued selling it. I got mine from Hortico in April. Here's the first flowering.

Belle Story is a tough little rose. The blooms are a little faded from pink/peach to just light pink after 12 hours in near 100 degree heat and strong winds. You can see some petal burn on the right side of the bud. The fragrance held up well.

I really like the soft and graceful character of Belle Story. I might need another one!

Sharifa Asma's very first bloom had a golden glow coming from the center.

No glow but has a pretty pink center and great fragrance.

The lavender roses in the blue vase are Love Song. Not the first blooms but the first blooms I brought inside. The color is fabulous and to all who praised this rose, thank you for enabling me!

Hope everyone is staying cool!

Ann

Hi Haku - I've read about some challenging experiences with LEH on the Rose Forum due to disease and other problems. I've seen LEH in terrible shape at nurseries which discouraged me from getting it. Whatever you do when you really need to baby a rose, I would do it initially for LEH. Babying for me means putting the rose in a pot with the best soil possible until it grows up a bit. I would also not put it in the ground until fall after the ground has cooled off, then let the rose get settled during the winter so it's ready to take off by the following spring.

The colors in the LEH photos are amazingly accurate!

They all look lovely. LEH is one of my favorites. I'll be interested to see how Belle Story does for you this year. I know very little about it.

Hcarnevale - You have fabulous Austin collection and I enjoyed your photos. There is a discussion of Belle Story on the Antiques Forum if you're interested. I posted photos there as well.

Irisgal - Love Song's companions are Summer Love (yellow), Princess Alexandra of Kent (dark pink), Abe Darby (pink/peach), Brother Cadfael (med pink bud). In the other vase, the peach colored spray is Jude the Obscure, Pope John Paul (white), Double Delight (red). My JtO which was the size of a one gallon plant for several years is growing nicely into a shrub but it's also thrown out several 4ft canes with these wonderful sprays at the top. This is the only one that's bloomed enough to cut. I've got at least three more to look forward to.

Sharlene - Hope to see some bouquets from you soon!
