MamaP's FL questions, comments ect...

I thought rather than jump around on different posts I'd start a post where I can question or comment.

I do have a comment...I think I had a glitch..I had a load of pillowcases washing on Allergen (my sanitize)..I happened to go take a look the clock was at think :42 I had an extra rinse enabled so I'm thinking this was the first rinse..anyway when I shined the flashlight in I almost had a fit..the water was almost up half way up the glass...I have never seen this..my phone was across the house and by the time I ran for it to take a pic it was already draining out...was this a glitch? my machine does use more water on rinse for allergen but NOT this much. Believe it or not this actually panicked me...imagine a FL with water like this. LOL.

Thank You Dadoes..I'm looking for a kill a watt..probably will have to order on line

I see Home Depot sells them..next trip that way I'll pick one up as its almost an hour away.

If I knew your address, I'd have one there from Amazon in the blink of an eye.

Thanks Suburbanmd...I'm getting myself to Home Depot soon and I'll grab one..I'm anxious to test it out..more fun lol

One thing that drives me insane is how sensitive the Duets panel touch buttons are..even a slight brush up with my shirt touching it will cause havoc. Forget the kids using that room (its also mud room)..I need a tall child safety gate in front of the washer LOL

Is there a control lock on your model?

    mamapinky0 thanked suburbanmd

Yes, there's a control lock. Pinky, think hands-free...

If the control lock doesn't help with the touching. Consider getting the pedestal. It would put the controls about 15 in higher off the floor. Don't know if that would help with brothers head and hip bumping each other. I expect you will see more of that in the future not less.

Duh...yes I have control lock..is that what this things for...LOL...I will test it with my fat...shirt....ok..I just ran in and tested it as I have a load in and guess what it works..imagine that. I LOVE my PERFECT Duet more everyday. Musta been one of the things I skimmed over in the manual thinking to read the important stuff Haha...thank you

I Finially timed a load of sheets on my Allergen (150'sF) cycle...2 hours and 10 minutes..thats with the 2 default rinses and one extra rinse. I'm lovin it LOL.

My rinses are quick...quicker than I like...it hadn't posed a problem but if I should choose to use chlorine bleach I think it goes into the first rinse and I don't think the rinse lasts 5 minutes. Moroseaz...do you ever use chlorine? I know chlorine shouldn't be in contact more than 5--6 minutes..wonder if 3 minutes is long enough if I'm using it to sanitize..anyone know?

I don't use chlorine on a regular basis. Haven't counted rinses, either, since it's water in, slosh, water out, tumble, water in, etc, etc. If I have something that has to bleached, I often spot treat or soak before throwing it in the washer. Depends if I'm sanitizing or removing stains.

I will have to time my rinses, I actually think I get a longer first rinse if I don't add a third rinse, but I'll have to watch this to be sure.

Moroseaz..what is your procedure when using bleach to sanitize?

@pink and moroseaz - Are there 2 rinses by default and a third can be added?

i believe Whites automatically adds the third as its anticpiating bleach will be added.

in all other cycles I am curious if the bleach dispenser triggers. For those that do use bleach in those other cycles, a third rinse should be added.

My personal preference is bleach be added the last 4 or 5 minutes of the main wash. But that's just me. LOL

If you hear a short intake of water a few minutes before the end of the wash cycle, that's the bleach being dispensed.

    last modified: 10 years ago

Bleach is dispensed in the first rinse after the water level has been reached.

I just looked at the 97HED's Whitest Whites first rinse and it lasted for 2:10 minutes after the bleach got dispensed, which gives the bleach about 5+ minutes to work - if you include the time the clothes are drained and spun, before new water is added and the bleach diluted.

    Bleach dispense: https://youtu.be/g5tGpx1cyVw?t=27m15s

@whirlpool -.is that the only cycle bleach is dispensed?

On mine, the first rinse always goes through the routine/protocol of squirting some water through the bleach dispenser. It's just makes good sense to clean out the dispensers.

I just watched my Towels cycle do 4 rinses..so this cycle does 3 by default. I watched the first rinse, it added rinse water, than it flushed out the bleach dispenser, tumbled about 3&1/2 minutes than drain and spin. ..I like that I can get 3 rinses after bleach, at least on Towels..I'll watch the Whites cycle next time I use it.

Sin..I know on Allergen and HD there's 2 default rinses and I can add a third...Now ontoy burning question Sin...when you add bleach to the last few minutes of your wadh cycle..I'm assuming you dump the bleach down the main detergent dispenser and chase it with some water..LOL...

I've not actually payed attention if the bleach compartment flushes on each cycle, now I want to know..I have to watch and learn..but seems like I hear that frequently so I think it does but I'll double check.

    Thank you

@pink - the LG adds it the last 5 minutes of the main wash, so it's not any issue for me. But to answer your question, yes you can dump it down the dispenser and chase it with water. I do that when I need to run sizing separate from conditioner, or some other additive in the final to rinses.

Good luck finding that "five minutes before the main wash drain" spot on modern washers, which are constantly adjusting the cycle time...

Pinky, if I need to sanitize, I use the Sanitize cycle with bleach in the bleach compartment. I trust the washer to take it from there. I don't want the smell of bleach on my load when it comes out of the washer. If it has that smell, I would put it through a hot quick wash.

Moroseaz, why even bother with bleach in your sanitize since you get the thermal sanitize?

What is a thermal sanitize? The sanitize washes with hot water, rinses cold, steam comes in somewhere in there (1.12 on the countdown) and then whatever it does after that. If I want something truly sanitized I'm going to put bleach in the cycle.

Thermal sanitize = a hot, hot wash cycle; NSF Sanitary cycle.

Thermal = heat. Sanitation by way of sufficient temperature, without bleach or other chemicals.

vs. chemical sanitation which uses chlorine bleach or other appropriate chemicals ... and does not require high temperature. Chlorine bleach and cold water can sanitize.

Rps - I've watched all the cycles that were uploaded of the 97HED (Normal, Heavy, Whites, Towels and Cold Wash) and they all dispensed bleach.

Good to know for those who own the machine. So we now know HD and ALLERGEN have two rinses. If the operator uses bleach with those cycles, an additional rinse needs added. BLEACH, RINSE,RINSE. We know on the WHITES, it adds the third automatically. We know the TOWELS adds 4 rinses automatically, one of which is bleach if you use it. Excellent operator observations. Tip: Jot down this stuff for future reference and place with the manual.

Dadoes - I know bleach added to any temp should sanitize - the pool, for example. Doesn't mean I trust the pool to be clean, just smelly. Speaking of - time for a margarita and spa. Hopefully, the husband didn't turn the heater on.

Yes chlorine in the correct dose of course will sanitize in cold water..but if you get sanitize temps on a sanitize cycle is it really needed LOL.

I almost always add a rinse expecially if I use my Allergen (154F) cycle as it tends to whip up the suds, but I'm not sure I need it unless I'm using chlorine as this cycle uses soo much more water.

I tested my towels cycle with bleach and although it flushed the bleach out.. once the load was done I ran my finger thru the bleach compartment and I smelled chlorine on my fingers...I don't use bleach very often so when I do I'll just be prepared to help flush it manually. LOL.

I'm jotting down all kinds of notes and will make my own operators manual, once I'm done learning and am ready to type this up I will laminate it..LOL Some of these things I can learn in my manual..but since my manual has already lied to me about my sanitize it can't be trusted. LOL.

Moroseaz...save me a Margarita and make room in the tub...I'm on my way.

I found out today I can have a warm or even hot rinse. Drain and spin and choose extra rinse gives a rinse temp of whatevers chosen.

Mama - you found an Easter egg in the software. LOL! I would have never thought to try to add extra rinse to drain and spin.

Very cool find. That will be nice in the dead of winter if you want an extra, non-icy rinse.

YEs but Ican't take the credit for finding the extra rinse. Think that was Dadoes or Boba that told me about it..but I didn't know until today that I can choose the temp...very cool or should I say warm lol.

I'd be more than surprised if a hot rinse is allowed, selecting Hot temp doesn't necessarily mean it applies to the rinse. Can you confirm tap-hot water flows in? Or check the temp at drain?

Odd. The manual says all rinses are cold water. If I ever use the extra rinse, I'll have to take a look at that. Haven't had a warm rinse available since my last TL.

Dadoes I will double check when this load is done but unless I thought I had it on drain/spin with rinse but actually had it on quick wash..lol. I'll double check.

Duvet cover done so I hit drain/spin chose extra rinse and hot...and yes it was hot tap running thru the detergent dispenser. Try it out Moroseaz..pretty neat.

Oh my .... I'm shocked, LOL.

I was doing a search on AW...doesn't seem like they know about this..I take it this is a glitch and not supposed to be doing all temp rinses? This washer hasn't done what is supposed to do since I got it Haha. I am very curious for Moroseaz to test hers.

AW - Frigilux, a member there, has a Maytag 8100 that also provides a warm or hot rinse on the rinse/spin cycle. *thumbs up*

There's nothing wrong with the machine or this brand. ALL these machines have hidden functions programmed into the software that is activated sometimes by a certain sequence of buttons. These finds are not documented anywhere and most times the manufacturer don't even know they exist.

Many times the same control unit is used across several models with different features implemented in different ways for different models. It's about cost, and rather than engineering and manufacturing 5 different control units for 5 different models, one core unit is developed and features are implemended via software, or different logic lines on the LED control panel.

A series of specs is developed and bid out for manufacture and design. Whirlpool does not produce their own in house electronics.

The Rinse & Spin cycle by way of selecting Extra Rinse with Drain & Spin is not hidden on Mama's machine. It's documented in the user manual. Hot is the unusual part! Probably comes about by way of which subroutine Extra Rinse adds to the basic Drain & Spin.

Some models have an explicit Rinse & Spin cycle but no Spin Only ... in which case Spin Only may be had by unselecting Extra Rinse from Rinse & Spin.

"Some models have an explicit Rinse & Spin cycle but no Spin Only ... in which case Spin Only may be had by unselecting Extra Rinse from Rinse & Spin"

Goes directly to my point upthread.

Sin..I didn't mean to sound like I thought something was wrong with my machine..I have read enough to realize FL'ers have some interesting finds...this *choose my own temperature on a extra rinse* is a cool find. I suppose it may come in handy in the dead of my northern winter. LOL.

Today I am going to run a clean cycle using chlorine bleach. First I am going to pull back the rubber door seal and wipe it out with a weak solution of bleach water, I have noticed white powdery residue in there that I'm assuming is powder detergent residue, but I don't like seeing it. Lol. I won't get to this until afternoon.

I read in my manual there is a product called Affresh Grit Grabber Cloth. Its designed to periodically wipe out the door seal, has anyone used them? Are they worth buying or just gimmiky? Any advice is much appricated..Thanks

Mama...I have a old white hand towel that I use to wipe down the door and boot when I'm done with the washer.

I would NOT bother paying money for the Affresh Grit Grabber Cloth when a regular old towel will do the trick.

Thanks Georgethat's what I thought. I also use a white terry cloth hand towel to wipe it all down at the end of the day. There has never been a day yet that my machine hasn't had her rub down lol.

Now this was an interesting find after reading mamas post. My LG/Kenmore, which does have a dedicated Rinse and Spin cycle, will let you select an extra rinse actually up to 4 with Spin Only. It also lets you select the water temperature, although HOT is not an option. Warm, Cold, or Tap Cold. I think there is a whole lot of commonality with these electronics.
