You can definitely do a different counter! Are your floors the same in the kitchen and this said space? Wall finishes?

My floors are a light colpored 7" wide wood that is very similar to the entire home. Walls are Sherwin Williams Marshmellow. Trim & cabinets are white. Overall the room is very light w/4 windows.

Depends on how much you want the whole house to flow.

is the laundry room walled off from the kitchen? It's an opportunity to do something different (helps make doing laundry more interesting)

Your laundry room does not look like your kitchen; and I do not think anyone would mistake the two. Also, I think that installing Carrara marble in the adjacent laundry room, too, may take away some of the panache of the kitchen. There is such a thing as overdoing a thing - to the point of the novelty wearing off.

You can create a connection with a complementary backsplash and just add a less expensive countertop. The flooring and white cabinetry already play a role in creating a nice flow.

If you can find a honed or sueded grey granite you like it could play well / flow with the marble in the kitchen. Virginia Mist is one that you could call around and ask to see if they have slabs available. It would give the laundry a more casual feel. Definitely don’t do a quartz unless it’s a solid - but since you’re already in the real stone world with kitchen I’d continue along that vein.

You have what my family calls a ”utility room”. A gem! The counters will receive a lot of use, maybe washing off muddy shoes, and you say tinker space, with perhaps glues, Goof-Off, solvents, etc. Consider countertops that will stand up to it. Like Corian or even Formica.
