Taking them to the ceiling would be ideal but those beams kind of get in the way of what normally would be a 'flush to the ceiling' look. So no don't take them to the ceiling. However, You could add moulding to the top of them to give them a more custom look.

If modern is what you are trying to achieve then a slanted molding wouldn't work because that is more contemporary. miw that I think of it, I'm not sure a moulding would make it modern if that is what you are going for.
