Thank you very much NHBabs. This is really my first year with plants and while I thought the roots looked okay, I also thought it might be a good idea to get an opinion from someone with more experience.

I do have a few other questions...

Is it possible that the roots never broke dormancy?

Is there a way to remedy that?

Plant in good soil, keep it from drying out, and give it plenty of sun. After that, patience, with Clematis perhaps a bit more that many other plants. No remedy other than that.

Thank you again NHBabs! I've been keeping the roots watered, but I was hesitant to put them in the sun since there was no growth. I'll just keep them near the side of the house so they don't scorch. I've got the patience (mostly) and it's nice to know that there MAY be a chance for these little ones after all. Thank you!

I didn't say above, but the top of the roots should be 4"-6" below the top of the soil.

FYI bare root isn't the best way to buy/start Clematis...But NHBabs is correct. They should be in the sun but buried deep.
