It looks like - ach was sage ich - it IS the famous "first known hybrid Gardeners' Amaryllis" in other words a heirloom Hippeastrum, namely H. x johnsonii. I think the most famous heirloom Hippeastra are "Johnsonii" and "Mrs.Garfield" and I wonder wonder WONDER why these are not commercially grown in The Netherlands and made available to us Europaeans. I am yet to behold either in natura!

Btw, one quality of "Johnsonii" is its capability of producing 6 florets per umbel, and as far as I can see, two scapes in your picture DO reveal this. Thank you for sharing!

Where does your sister live? I have tried x johnsonii a few times in my zone 6 garden and they only came back one year, then turned to mush :-(((( I have two pots full (grown from seed) that I will experiment with and I will also try a different mulching technique this fall/winter in the hopes of getting them to come back next year.

I'd have to grow any tender bulb in a pot, bringing it indoors for the colder months, but I don't mind a bit! It's worth it when they bloom!
