Whatever works for you. As long as it can drape over itself the longer clematis will do. I grow the shorter 'Bourbon' on a small trellis next to my mailbox preferring to grow 'Jackmannii' up a large obelisk.

It takes them three to four years to reach mature height, I would use a smaller cultivar myself...

I planted it on a recommendation, it only took until the next season to realize my mistake. Although the deer do a nice job on keeping the jackmanii in check, I would probably do a smaller cultivar in the future.
