kitchen layout help

last modified: 10 years ago

Hi everyone,

My partner and I just bought a house in a great neighborhood but it needs a kitchen remodel. We are at the early stages of thinking (and saving!) for it, but I thought I might as well get started early. I've pasted images below of the existing layout as well as my proposed layout based on what I've learned from lurking here.

Goals for kitchen remodel: make kitchen more functional as well as an entertaining space. We entertain fairly frequently, often 10-12 people, and usually end up eating and drinking in the kitchen. I like to cook and we like to cook together, but we are not chefs. We want it kid-friendly for nieces that visit. Usually, however, it will just be the two of us.

Plan is to merge the current kitchen, breakfast room, and dining room into a single large space. The breakfast room is quite dark and removing the penisula between the kitchen and breakfast room should lighten things up a bit. The wall between the kitchen and dining room is load-bearing so would require a header.

I would love an island and think it is possible given that we will have cabinets on only one side. I also would like to enlarge the window over the sink, and possibly make it a bay window.

I'm not real sure how to use the breakfast room - it will be a main thoroughfare between the front door and the living room. Right now it is almost non-functional. We considered closing up the door between the breakfast room and the family room, but worry it would reduce flow in the house.

We are now thinking about a 36 or 48 inch range, but I'm worried by the make-up air requirements. Also considered a dual wall oven and cooktop, but I'm not sure of the layout to make that happen. I don't have a burning preference either way, but think that the range might be more of a "centerpiece" in the kitchen than separate appliances. Also want a counter-depth fridge.

We don't really need a walk-in pantry, but some of the layout is for resale value. It is a big house and a kitchen suitable for a large family is something we are thinking about for when we go to sell (hopefully many years in the future, but still).

cannot live without - dishwasher

definitely do not want - warming drawer

would like if possible - double ovens. a small secondary oven would be preferred, which is why I was thinking of the 48 inch range.

I am thinking of walnut cabinets with white quartz countertops, white subway tile backsplash, and a tile floor.
