Need help on Window decision-Sunrise Windows?

Hi, We are pricing replacement windows to replace old wood Lincoln windows, and we have received one quote for Verde Sunrise windows for $35K and from another dealer a quote for Restoration Sunrise windows for $69K. That is a huge difference in price between the lines. The quote for restorations lists full tear out, but the verde quote just says reinstate and trim outside casings and trim with aluminum. Any feedback would be appreciated!

By the way, we have 52 windows...just thought that was relevant also.

Did the Restorations dealer say why they wanted to do a full tear out or if it was a must? If you can do an insert, I would go that route. That will definitely take the price down a bit.

Thanks WOW Ltd! I am going to be checking on that. The salesman may have gone to full replacement by default due to my comments about not wanting to lose window surface. However, as I am working through this window process, I am thinking that I may actually be happier with losing a little glass area and keeping my original trim inside and saving $. We do have a bit of rot on the exterior frames of windows, but they may be able to cut that out and replace and then just do the aluminum wrap. I am going to be checking with the restoration dealer.

The Sunrise is so narrow a frame that depending on your current window, the glass loss is imperceptible. Do you currently have storm windows? If so, the glass will feel larger when you are done.

We do not have storm windows. We have wood and a few aluminum clad wood lincoln casement windows, as well as a handful of specialty shaped trapezoid picture windows. Basically, a late 80's modernist ranch. We are wanting to keep casement style window through out (no grids) and just change the basement windows and one small double garage window to sliders.

I just got a revised quote for the Restoration windows...this quote reflects replacement insert and not full tear out. It is $44,500 & change for 51 windows...mostly casements, a few sliders in basement and one more on the back garage, and some large trapezoid picture windows. We are leaving one Pella window that was replaced not that long ago that is by itself and I think it will blend in fine. Our other quote was for Verde for $35K and change. Not sure if the Restoration is worth $9k more? Would still like to get that $44K down some? Not sure if we are at the bottomline with either estimate right now.....would love to see a bit more shaved off. Just so many stinking windows....so much money. Any further feedback most appreciated!

Depends on what options they quoted the Verde with. They extrusions are identical if I am not mistaken, but they sometimes reserved options for the restorations. Get them to give you the thermal data on the two and see how they stack up. Going to be hard, assuming they are comparable glass packages, to justify the 9K.

Crazy how many windows they put in homes now isn't it.

The Restoration isn’t worth $9,000.00 more in an apples to apples comparison.

We are at $42,500 for the Restorations now and that is for 51 windows...all casement. We dropped the sliders as I didn't like the look mixed with the casements. This is for replace...not full frame tear out. Can anyone comment on the price?

That is for i89 glass and solar clean...no grids for windows.

Also, trying to decide on color....thinking about earth tone which is a rich brown or possibly antique brown which looks almost black. Would anyone advise against dark colors on these vinyl windows due to heat or should we be fine? We wanted the windows to pop out since we have some great trapezoids and full wall windows....thus, thinking of the darker colors.

Here is a picture of the house. Thinking of painting the house cream and having the dark windows pop. Brick will remain the same on the bottom.

No, I am not, but it would probably be a good idea.

Beautiful home Lana. The trapezoids aren't cheap so you will unfortunately get hit pretty hard on those. Let me know if I can point you in the right direction out there as I have a few guys that I know.

Thanks, WOW! Kiko, the home has not had any additions. I feel like the center two story area fights with the rest of the modern ranch style of home, but we are not doing any extensive renovations other than windows and paint/replace rotten siding. We thought about painting out the side windows of the front door in the same color as the door to give it more presence and maybe putting contemporary shutter sets on the top two windows areas of the two story addition in the middle. There is no perfect solution without major renovations. I would love to change the siding, but not really in the budget with the windows needing to be done. I think I will post in design area for some feedback.

WOW, now that you have seen a picture of the house...would you opt for restorations at $42,500 or do the verde at $35,500....assume everything else is the same...same glass packages essentially...same screen...same hardware. I believe both dealers to be reputable with long track records. Warranty is better at dealer with restorations. The restorations are still at 20% premium at this price. I feel like I could stomach 10-15% uncharge but 20% seems bit high. Also, WOW, what is your opinion on dark vinyl windows? Yay or nay? Is is better to keep it light color for performance reasons?

Lana, i love your lawn. Looks like the turf at an Orioles game.

The dark colored vinyls hold up amazingly well these days with the paint
technology. Given that the extrusions are the same, I am not sure I
can see a 20% premium in there for the other product (assuming we are
comparing similar glass packages and options). There is something to be
said for the better warranty, but not sure its 20% again.

We are now at $39k on our quote for the Sunrise Restorations. This is for 51 windows....mostly casement windows and 5 large trapezoids. 12 of the casements must be tempered. This quote comes out to an average of $764 per window for insert replacement.... not full tear out. Does this seem like a reasonable price? We negotiated down from $42,500. Of course, there are no grids....window will be sandstone on outside and white on inside.... argon gas with double pane glass, i89 glass with solar clean option, noMar aluminum exterior brick mold wrap, clear view screens, and a double warranty transferable to second homeowner. Should we pull the trigger?

Sunrise make the nicest casement in my opinion.

Can anyone comment on the price? It is so much money...just want to know if we are overpaying. Thanks so much! I love this site and all the help! These are super big decisions!

In all honesty I am not that familiar with the current vinyl pricing but it definitely does not sound like a bad deal. It is tough to average it out as casements are generally expensive (and temp glass add to it for sure) and traps skew everything as there is no basis for a cost comparison most times.

Given the fact that you’re getting casements, and two-tone finish, I think the pricing you’ve received it reasonable. If you are comfortable with the installation details, and the contractor in general, I’d say go for it.

Thank you all! We are going to do the Restoration casements! Should I have any of those big trapezoid windows tempered? See picture above. My estimate does not have them listed as tempered...just some other windows that are a certain distance from the floor. Anything that I should specifically look for/have put in the contract? This is not full tear out. You guys rock for taking your time to help guide homeowners!

I would consider it strongly were it me.

We are going to temper the two trapezoids over the door, but not the ones in the great room.

I would not temper any of them if it were my house.

I would want to know how they were going to trim the interior and the exterior.

We did go with the Sunrise restoration casements...the windows look nice. There were some problems with some scratches between the glass on quite a few. The rep came out and was very nice. They are being reordered. I hope that we do not have a repeat of this problem on the reorder.

Sounds good. Most times if there is a defect in the glass, it is in batches and you will see more than one. I am sure they will get it fixed up for you. Post up some follow up pictures if you get a chance.
