Ugly FLagstone (I think?

Hi I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for how to repair this flagstone porch. There are areas where the mortar is totally non-existent and areas where the previous homeowners attempted to repair, but the mortar is all over the stone and a different color than the older areas. I've always had a wooden porch so any help with how to bring back the beauty is much appreciated!!

The Washington Post had an article in their Home and Garden Section about a week ago addressing just this issue. Perhaps you can find it online. Yes you can replace the crumbling grout/mortar and yes you can remove the excess with muriatic acid. It's a fair amount of work.

A flagstone porch of this nature is a very valuable commodity. I would call in professional help to preserve the integrity of the porch.
