Our 1947 ranch in the California desert has been described as a puzzle house. I love the idiosyncracies, such as every room except the bath having a window into at least one adjacent room, which gives surprising reflections we are still discovering. It is an odd house. I'm remodeling the last room to make a hallway and bedroom, and am looking for your memories of strange and fun architectural or design features that will preserve and extend the original owner's theme of "We just thought we needed that. Don't care if we are the only ones." My first is speaking tube from the kitchen pantry to this bedroom. A half-circle alcove holds a cozy half-circle couch for reading, card games, sleeping and conversation. What else can we add to this hall and bedroom? It will be paneled wirth old whitewash shiplap, and faces east onto an olive grove.
