Perhaps paint it a similar color to the brick.

Margocorp - I like the idea of gray. I'd originally considered a gray frame and a reddish-brown stain for the wood. However, the stain sample looked very orange when put anywhere near the brick. Are you suggesting to paint the wood and frame the same color? or paint the frame and stain the wood in a gray tone?

Personally, I probably would have painted the metal black and stained the wood the charcoal gray. You could stain the wood first and then decide if you like the steel gray frame with it.

I would repaint the metal black and stain the wood a natural color like this honey colored arched door. Look at the black door handle on the light colored wood gate and see how it contrasts so well with the wood and brick.

If you go too redwoody style it will look orange next to your brick because the colors are too similar. It also may be that the silver paint on the metal work is not a strong enough contrast to the brick and the wood as well, so any color stain looks off.

Take a look at this long gate and how well the dark metal frames the wood. The stain is a little orangy but overall the wood really pops.

I like the charcoal color stain with green undertones, and than see if you want to paint the metal.

Are there other gray or wood stained elements on your home? If not I would probably paint it white.

Ben - That gate is similar. I like the smaller slats at top on it. So far, I'm leaning towards painting/finishing the gate like that.

FK - I've been toying with gray, but all I knew is that I didn't want a bluish-gray. Incidentally, that's the color gray chosen by the fence company to go with the stain that didn't go with the house.

grapefruit1 - good question. The backyard fence and pergola are natural cedar. If I stain the fence, I'd probably stain them as well.

I've attached a front-view and right-side view of the house. The driveway is on the left.

I've attached a picture of the front and the gate on the right side of the house. All of the fence/pergola in the backyard is stained clear (natural). If I stain the wood portion of the gates, I'll also stain the fence/pergola.
