Sta Green

last modified: 10 years ago

hello all -

I have a half bag of Sta Green weed/feed. Is it safe to use in July or should I wait till September to use it?

The temps are in 90's this week & probably remain in 80's throughout August. The temps magically drop after Labor day.

thanks,
Henry

Where are you located? What kind of grass do you have?

JC, I am no expert on grass. I have some tall fescue but not much. I'm in Philly area.

I'd skip the fertilizer until fall, causing growth now can get you in trouble with fungal disease, and is also bad for the grass in the heat.

Stay away from weed and feed type products in the future - the timing for feeding and killing weeds is almost never the same. Also, in order for the weed part to work, the lawn has to be wet for the granules to stick to the blades - and then the fertilizer sticks too. Just get fertilizer when it's time to fertilize and a liquid weed control product which you can use to spot spray when needed.

well, I do like the idea of a spray weed killer. The bag was first opened after a good rain & the leaf blades were soaked. Another rain came in later that evening. But I get your meaning. How do I know if the granular hit the weed & stuck? I dont.

Its technically possibly for a granular weed and feed to work if you apply to a moist lawn, then the 2-4d will stick to broadleaf weeds and might slow them down a bit. Much better solution is to prevent weed germination with a pre-emergent herbicide early spring, then apply stand alone fertilizer on Memorial Day, Labor Day and after Halloweento Turkey Day. In May/early June spray any weed that did germinate with standard Ortho weed B gone.

thanks New... I'm looking at various species of clover. Its not new, its been with me for some years now. I'd just love to get rid of it some time in the summer & so the new grass seeding can get plugged in fall or early spring. Late fall would be excellent for me cause we can start grass through mid December.

Weed B Gon Chickweed Clover and Oxalis will do the job on clover and clover-like weeds. As well as any 3 way/broadleaf herbicide found at any big box store. Best way is to get the "concentrate" and a $10 pump sprayer and mix it yourself. Add 1oz of clear baby shampoo to the mix to help it stick instead of bead up on the leaf. It will be dead in no time.

That'll work very well if you use the solution immediately and have none left over. Otherwise, spreader sticker will work much better and won't render the herbicide useless over the course of a day or two.

(The reason why is complex, but most herbicides require non-ionic surfactants. Clear baby shampoo and other liquid soaps are anionic surfactants and can cancel the effectiveness of herbicides if left more than a very short time. Sometimes, using an anionic surfactant can cause immediate precipitation and settling of the chemical used, rendering it useless, but that's reasonably rare).

Good to know. I can vouch for baby shampoo added to 3 way mixes and quinclorac for at least 45 days, I make a 2 gallon sprayer and use it over summer, seems to stay good. Going to buy some NIS next chance I get.

Some things react, some don't. I can also vouch for Tenacity for at least 6 months using an anionic surfactant...but I still went and bought Turbo Spreader Sticker at the first opportunity.
