Just make sure when you invest whatever into this project you will get a return on your money, should you sell.

I hope you are not concerned with resale. A pool in that climate will likely be a negative for future buyers, or at the very least you will see no return on that part of your investment. The rest of your ideas seem good though. Are you new to the area?
