If interior, start with the largest pieces of furniture: sofa, chairs coffee table, rugs, dining table and chairs. You can mix and max traditional and contemporary styles creating a transitional look. For example: pairing a round armed sofa with a modern chair/coffee table . You can also select a track armed sofa- most of them would be viewed as a transitional silhouette.

Right about here is a good place to start. Think about what your personal style lands (modern, rustic, country etc). The common law suggests that you have some contrast between your vertical and horizontal surfaces.

You don't have to go to magazines to look for what you want your house to look like! Just go through photos here on Houzz. It's what I did before we moved into our house last year.

just remember to start different folders one for bedrooms etc. this allows to easier see your style per room, because it can be very different. have fun.

Im sorry I should have been more clear, exterior . Should I get an residential architect ? considering I don't want to do any major reconstruction.

You just need a local designer. Unless you want to do an addition or start taking walls down etc. Be sure that the permanent elements of the home reflect the home's own style rather than any fad. Leave the fad elements to things that can be easily changed. Like light fixtures, wall paint colors, and soft furnishings.

Do you want to change your house itself or just the décor?

First you start by getting rid of clutter and that means getting rid of anything and every thing that you don't use or don't like and, importantly, can do without. You may not like your appliances or larger pieces of furniture or some of your clothes, but you may need them till you can replace them with something you do like.

If you are like most people, you have not only clothes taking up closet and drawer space but also kitchen stuff and/or nick knacks and/or photo frames and/or mirrors and/or decorations and/or "office stuff" or sewing stuff and/or quilting scraps and/or other hobby stuff you'll never use and just stuff filling stuff drawers and storage boxes as well as pieces of furniture -- perhaps something given to you or inherited by you that you've kept for sentimental reasons or guilt that you don't really need -- all requiring you to need more closet or furniture/furnishings to provide storage space for them. Free yourself from the irritation of having stuff in your space that you don't like.

If you have a lot of stuff to get rid of, then you could have an auction or a have a yard sale or, if you don't actually need the money, then donate your stuff to the Habitat for Humanity Restore Store or the Salvation Army Family Store or Good Will or to a church sponsored thrift store near you.

Second, you begin changing out what's left -- what you need but hate most -- as your budget permits -- first replacing all of those items you truly but hate BEFORE beginning to add stuff that's just stuff because you think you like it. Get the core of your décor right first, then add to that.

Next, once you have the core of your possessions to your liking, rethink the color of your home itself. Consider any structural changes you want to make first and then change any colors to coordinate with the new environment you've created.

Concurrently with getting rid of clutter and stuff inside that you don't like, you could also get rid of stuff outside that you don't like -- yard ornaments and old flower pots, even ripping up and/or mowing the "flower" bed that is more trouble to maintain than it is worth.

Finally, once all you have that you NEED is to your liking, then find what you want.

There are no absolutes, however, so if you were to find one or two pieces that you feel could actually DEFINE the new environment you want to create and if it is within your budget, go for it.

I want to change the exterior of my home .

That would be expensive. And potentially ill advised. A home has "bones" that guide it's design choices. You don't take a lovely Colonial and make it into an Art Moderne without almost knocking it down and starting over.

I hate the front porch ,the colors of the house, the windows,the garage doors and the front door . :) I clearly purchased this house because I absolutely love the neighborhood and the lot it sits on. The interior was done completely modern except I have this large brick fire place that has to go and Im changing the color of the hardwood floors.

Yes I definitely want to change the color however this is still very traditional. The good thing about my neighborhood is none of the homes look the same. So we have some contemporary style homes ,tudors etc .

I absolutely love what they did to the outside of this home how they were able to keep the colonial look with modern elements .

What if I changed the windows ,get rid of the shutters,completely change the color scheme my goodness,change my front door as well as garage doors.

Definitely change the colums and do the metal roof on the porch ?

I am with sophie this time. I will try a comparison of what i think. Remember as a kid, or even after, you really wanted that flame red convertible sports car? But of course price and practicality made you get a different one. after driving it a while, you learned to appreciate betsy or whomever the car might be, because in the end it is a car, you must have it, and if it performs well for a good price, that is what truly matters.

You may not hear from them on houzz much or not at all, but billions of people live in homes that they did not like at the start. many never like certain aspects, but a house is a place to live and a home can be anywhere you make it so.

I ABSOLUTELY don't plan to make any structural changes . I agree with Erica Im definitely going to start with the front door and windows as those have to be replaced anyway. The porch columns for sure and new colors for the siding .

Im just trying to figure how to give my house a little bit of a modern look without having to do any major renovations other than windows .
