What's up with my zonals?

My pelargoniums are looking pretty sad. This has always been a great planter for them, but the tree that shaded them in the afternoon died. So they are getting full sun all day in hot and humid Florida.

It this from too much sun? Even the flowers look like they are burnt before the open up.

Too much or too little water? We've had an unusually dry few weeks here (usually our rainy season), so I tried watering in either morning or late afternoon. And that led to one of them rotting, so I quit.

And what about fertilizer? I haven't used any fert in the last month or so.

I haven't switched out any soil in years. And mason bees have taken a liking to this planter as well. Hmm - maybe they have plugged up the drainage holes. It's happened before. That's a thin layer of mulch on top.

Any advice is appreciated! Thank you!
