ID could depend on whether you are being stung (bee) or bitten (fly).

I can't say for sure whether it stung or bit. This morning a pinprick-sized hole (different from a pore) was visible in the most sensitive area of my swollen cheek. I'm allergic to wasps and bees, based on allergy tests.

Horseflies are aggressive, attacking very commonly where there is lots of activity. You said that you thought at first of horseflies.....perhaps you should consider that that's the culprit.

I think the offender is a bumblebee. Today I was working in the garage and a bumblebee came to investigate in a manner similar to the one the other day, but this time it wasn't aggressive and moved slowly. So I got an ID. Late this evening there was a bumblebee flying in and out around the cinder block footing next to the garage. No aggression.

The offender may still be something else, but not today.

Dunno if I should leave it alone and let it nest? Or flood the area with water? Or use wasp spray (Raid wasp and hornet spray works the best for me on wasps and carpenter bees).

Yellow fly maybe. You don't know they have landed on you until they sting you. I welt up big time when they do. The only way you can stop them is to wear long sleeves, long pants, gloves and tuck your pant legs in your socks.

zzackey, I had never heard of Yellow Flies and had to look them up! How I've managed to go my whole life without meeting one of these is a mystery....they sound worse than deer flies!
