Need Help with an Old Bed

Ok so we had this classic bed, which unfortunately got in the hand of a wrong person and he ruined it with hideous green and golden paint which was very poorly done. I am looking to restore this for my dad. Can someone give me an idea of what to do with it. Also, should i do it myself or hire a professional?
