I have a bunch of these red-leaved plants growing, almost entirely around where I planted some annual verbena earlier this season, about a one square foot area. As you can see, the verbena behind this plant is out of bloom, and there's some crabgrass that I yanked after taking the picture. There's a David Austin rose nearby, and some Sienna Sunset coreopsis, and some salvia uphill. There are a couple of the weeds on the other side of the rose and coreopsis popping up, but that's the extent. I don't recall having anything in this spot last year.

About three feet in the other direction, I planted some lobelia the same day I planted the verbena, and there's no sign of this plant growing there. The entire garden is about 100 feet by 12 feet, so there's a lot of opportunity but the weed is extremely localized.

I find the color interesting, and since the verbena isn't doing anything, I'm halfway tempted to keep it. But I wouldn't do that without first knowing what it is. And it does look like it's getting ready to turn green.
