Max, I'm in NE PA and I have Grandpa Otts. I planted about 20 seeds five years ago and they reseed every year. In all other years since then, I generally see my first bloom 2nd or 3rd week in June. This year, it took until the week of July 4th. Even the vining of the plants was slower. In addition, all my vegetable plants are about two weeks behind. There's a Philly area poster here who is having the same experience. So, it might be a tough year to judge. Kwim?

As far as quicker germinators or growers, I'm not sure, as I have only planted Otts.

On the bright side, most years, these things have bloomed well into late October for me, as long as we don't have a heavy frost.

The main flowering months for the species mentioned above are late July through early October. Flowering is triggered by the shorter day length as you approach autumn.

Tell me about the "Reseeding" that takes place. So I don't have to plant new seeds again next year ?

I wish I had chosen a variety that was not so small-flowered as 'Grandpa Otts'. Can anyone recommend a larger flowered variety ?

You might try Heavenly Blue (Ipomoea tricolor). Be forewarned, you may just pass out upon seeing its flowers.

Max, I'm not an expert like Gerris, but I can tell you my experience here is NE PA with Otts. They reseed. I don't need to do anything in fall except remove the dead vine. What started out as a small vine in my chain link fence has blossomed (yeah..I'm punny) into a thick vine which produces a considerable amount of flowers and covers about 16 feet of my chain link. On the down side, I have to remove glory sprouts from almost everywhere in my yard. On the up side, if I am really good at removing the rogues, the area where I want the glories grow has been full and lush from July until October for 5 years, now. I have been told by other gardener friends in different zones that they need to replant these vines every year. Michigan and Chicago. I don't have to. I assume your zone would be similar to mine.

I am in Zone 7A in Southern New Jersey. I haven't grown MG's since the 1980s when I lived in Forest Hills, Queens, NYC. I grew them in window boxes in front of my patio railing, and they took over the entire railing. In the Fall, it took me hours upon hours to cut out the dead vines from the railing, as they were all intertwined amongst the grates. What a mess it was. So Today I am pleased to have the pleasure of growing them once more. I am a lover of vining plants, and also have over 18 Clematis plants growing right now, most in Pots/Containers, but I do have 4 planted in the ground. Many are brilliant growers and bloomers, and others not-so-much. I guess I want to now experience the MG 'Heavenly Blue' as I heard it is a larger flowered variety.

I'm a garden putzer. No expertise, nothing spectacular, but I adore gardening.

The morning glory cleanup is horrific. It takes me hours, it makes me itchy and by the time it is done It looks like one of those gigantic Tumbleweeds rolling around in Death Valley.

So, what happens when MGs re-seed ? What is the process? Where do the seeds appear that allow them to come back the next year ?

You know those hard pod like seeds that initially come in the package that you have to soak, pray over, chant and do voodo magic on in order for them to sprout when you first decide to plant? Well, it seems when they fall on the ground without being picked up, they appear to have a 151 percent germination rate without doing anything. Go figure.

I will have to look for them - I would assume they appear in the Fall when the vines are dried and the seed pods are visible (?). Right now the (4) plants that I have are large, I'm just not seeing a lot of flowers yet, I've only had 2 flowers appear on 'Grandpa Otts'. Nothing yet on 'Scarlet O'Hara'.

For the record, I don't collect or save these. I just let them there. They reseed in spring.

Ipomoea purpurea seed pods point down.

Seeds are ripe when pod is paper bag brown.

Ipomoea nil seeds point upwards.

The ovaries are in the base of the flower, and that is where the seed pod forms.

The intense Heat here of late has caused everything to wilt badly, even the Morning Glories, so I have to go out daily to water everything. My poor MG's and Clematis are struggling with this heat.

Yeah it is cooking pot hot here too.

My vines are right next to our swimming pool. As long as the kids are being ridiculous in the pool (always), my glories are happy. .

Got a few pink ones this year. Odd.

I thought I had planted two sets of 'Scarlet O'Hara' seeds, but what is coming up and blooming is all 'Grandpa Otts'......:(

That stinks. What color is the OHara bloom supposed to be, anyway? I've seen it described as red, fushia or purplish red?

Scarlet O'Hara is a bright scarlet Red! I don't think I'm gonna see it this year ...:(

Yeah, I don't know. I had 2 pkts. of 'Grandpa Otts' and 2 pkts. of 'Scarlet O'Hara'. I planted all 4 pkts. This is very strange.

No - All 4 plants have leaves that are heart shaped. My problem is I am seeing way to many leaves, and I'm not seeing enough Flowers. Maybe one or two flowers are appearing on the 'Grandpa Otts' plants. Nothing yet on the other two plants. Why so few flowers ??

It is early for flowers. My plants are just now budding up.

The reddish one looks like Crimson Rambler.

Yep, lots of lovely green vines .......no flower buds, and no flowers.....Somethin' is clearly amiss in MG Land!

It's Funny.....I checked all the Seed Companies websites and none of them can tell me when Morning Glories Bloom. Most sites just say "Summer/Fall". They don't provide a lot of information on all the different varieties they sell. Ok, so it's late July and I have gotten a few blooms here and there ..... nothing spectacular. I was hoping for a massive display. Maybe it will come in September. Who knows .......

Whoever you got the seeds from sent you a seed mix instead of just Grandpa Ott's.

I live in central Michigan. I did MG and moon flowers this year. My MF haven't done anything spectacular yet but the MG Vine is small but dense, pretty,and produced blooms. However, this morning my MG looked wilted. I watered good twice today at different times and the wilting is the same. My neighbor thought it was from heat but they haven't come back really even tonight. Yesterday, they were beautiful and today their totally different. I have a beautiful perennial garden but my MG look sad. Idk what to do. Any suggestions? I spend so much time on my plants! It makes me a little sad! Thanks!

I'm seeing Yellowing Leaves on my MG's. Don't know what is causing that. Does anyone have any ideas ?

Now that I think of it .... the last MG (which I think is MG 'Scarlet O'Hara' that has not yet bloomed) does not have leaves that look like the others .

You will see older leaves turn yellow and drop off the vine.

Brooke, what cultivars are you growing? Are you growing in pots or in the ground?

Joseph :: The yellowing leaves on my MG's are moving up the vines. I'm sure you are having the same Heat wave that we are here in Southern New Jersey. My MG's just are not doing well, it is so Hot in the morning, they don't even open and it just looks like the vines are dying, so I don't really know what's going on with my plants. Do you have any guess ?

I don't know what your soil is like. Do you amend it with compost?

No - my soil is Sandy - I do not amend the soil at all.
