Yes this is a very traditional bathroom. To give you a contemporary look, it's going to be a gut-job. You're best advised to work with a professional to design the space and select the finishes with you.

I can't see it being spa-like with that countertop. I'd aim for dark and dramatic instead. Also, replace all hardware and fixtures with shiny chrome.

Spas usually are done in light neutrals but are more modern vs. traditionally styled. They do often have stone features so I don't think it means you necessarily need to gut the bathroom or remove the countertop, especially since it's your goal to not go that far. Painting the walls light gray and replacing the mirrors and light fixtures would help a lot. If that's a shelf above the tub, it's likely that could be removed too. You could hang the tub's towel rack higher and hanging white waffle weave towels. If there is open wall space above the tub, you could hang art to fit the theme. You could add a vase with an orchid to each countertop.

What color best says to you: wake up and start your day? Hopefully not black specks.

Do change the counter top -- that one looks like an ugly kitchen and clashes with the tub enclosure. Tub surround doesn't look bad -- wouldn't put my remodel budget replacing that but another wall color would look better with it.

If you want to "un country" the color, paint the white cabinets and part time yellow ish walls to go with your new choice of counter top.

If the rest of the wall is like the second pic close up, then the walls need to be refinished smoothed or covered and I'd lose that odd off center shelf -- and the towel bar, too, at least until you refinished the walls.

Agree with Sandybean, nothing wrong with the countertops. They are pretty neutral and you can go in a lot of directions with color around them. Mostly I think you just need to add your personal touches with artwork and accessories. If I were to put money into anything in the bathroom, it would be to change the shower framing to frameless or semi-frameless clear glass ... if the shower is pretty inside.

If you are set on replacing counters, the most cost effective way in a small space like this is to look for remnants at local granite yards. You will have to do some searching and see what you fall in love with. You'll probably find quartz remnants also if you want to go in that direction. Again I wouldn't bother changing the counter out but if you decide to, this would be the way to do it.

Or leave the macadamia, and paint the ceiling soft blue / green....

Already said / art - canvas is a wipe off / over the tub.... nice tile you made.

Change the hardware to something more modern in a chrome finish. Replace the mirrors. If the current mirrors are attached and you can remove the wood framing they could be re-framed with a simple mitered plain trim and painted silver. Change to a more modern sleek light fixture. Remove the floating shelf and add art work. I would like to cover (if it doesn't interfere with the doors opening it might be possible to attach a 1/4" piece of board - then paint to match) or fill the fluting on the vanities. After these things were done I would decide on the paint. Art work can go a long way to tie things together.

I agree with other reviews, the cabinets are doing the talking when it comes to saying " country". Sound like you'd like slab doors. Beyond that, the granite should be quartz (or solid surface materials such as Cambria), large format tile on the walls and floor, etc. Rather than doing a partial that probably won't make you happy, save up your money and do it all at once.

Here are a few ideas (mirror could be white or silver). These have more modern hardware and one has a more modern light fixture. Just rough ideas.

Paint the walls a very light spa blue/green, like suggested above, before you do anything else. That may be all you need to get the spa feeling you want. The finishes in there currently look like good quality, and shouldn't need to be replaced.
