Hannah, where do you live? Please try to add some location info after your user name. It's surprising how you can make some adaptations to enable you to grow these plants, but admittedly, your zone 6 has me wondering.....?

As for growing them here, if you think I can, I'll look into it! I just assumed there were called "dessert" roses for a reason!

I'll start applying the fertilizer too. It's funny because after I repotted the big one, I decided to wait for it to recover before I gave it a harsh pruning, then it just exploded with flowers. Now I'm tempted to try the canopy thing that I've seen in some threads where they force the branches to turn out but I'm not sure how I can get away with that with all the branches forking out of the main caudex like that.

Hannah, I don't see why not! Give it a try. You'll have to make arrangements when it gets cold there, by bringing it in when temps drop. I put mine in the greenhouse during winter because I have cats that will get all up in a plants' business if I brought them in the house, sadly.

Wow, some of those seeds are getting pricey. Pretty thankful I have a seed pod going so that I can experiment to see if I can get the germinating and growing parts down before I start going after seeds with more interesting flowers!

Hm, images got reversed in upload, I guess. But I meant to show the second image first because this morning I decided to water it with its weekly dose of Dyna-Gro (1/8 tsp) before I got my day started, and that's when I noticed the leaves are getting really yellow on the branch that's supporting the seed pods. The other big branch to the right is also showing signs of yellowing (kind of hard to tell with the morning sun shining on them). We've been having a lot of 90's last week and this week so I don't know if the plant is stressing out over it. However at the base of the plant, there's a lot of new growth that seem happy.

My big adenium rose next to it shows no yellowing, as well as new growth coming out with green leaves.

Should I be concerned? Is it just older leaves falling off or? I'm really happy the seed pods are still looking healthy and strong so far.

Nah, it's fine. You're got it--the plant is just ditching old leaves.

I'm getting real nervous. I saw the branch leaning real low and whipped out some twine to wrap around several branches to support this one branch. I can't believe it's this big already. It's been insane to watch.

The other day a slight breeze had my largest pods branch moving like crazy. I was worried too, but everything seems ok.

I agree that the growth is phenomenal. Mine is also shedding leaves like crazy.

Wow, this was a long, long ride. I was worried Hurricane Matthew may have caused water damage because the top of the pods were looking weird even though I moved them to the covered deck to protect them from all that rain but wasn't quick enough or something. To my relief the pods are opening and revealing seeds!

Been a very fun experience! I guess the next thing to do is plant a couple of the seeds and see what their babies might look like.

Dragonstone, from my experience, you can detach those pods now. They won't form any more seeds.

Now I just pop them off when they split and empty them in a windless area to clean.

jedoba, I currently have the plant in the den since it's dropping to 48F tonight (Really baffled by this cold air coming down right after Matthew!) The seeds won't be able to escape me that easily! hehe.

Marie, I wish! I'm thinking of planting maybe just 4 or 5 seeds from this, because I'm not sure I'm gonna get anything interesting from the parents but it'd be neat to at least have a 'kid' of theirs around, like a happy family. Wish I had more space to try 'em all. Funny enough, my goal next year is to see if I can get the father to be the mom this time around.

I suppose I can always offer the extra seeds for anyone that's interested. I'm not sure yet. I'll have to sit down and sift through all the seeds to see what I got to work with.

I probably invested way too much time in this but I really was curious to see how many seeds each pod had since it was my first and all. The left pod had 54 plump, 24 empty, 78 total. The right pod had 61 plump, 24 empty, 85 total. 163 altogether. I was going to throw away the "empties" but now I wonder if I was being too hasty. There were seeds in there that had completely shriveled up instead of having some sort of lump to indicate anything was in there. Am I right to guess they're no good? I'm also curious; Is 24 'empties' in each pod an unusually high number?
