Common issue. They have off-years. Last year 100 blooms, this year about 12. Last year's spent blooms cut off in Septwmber. No explanation.

Interesting - mine blooms well every year. I'd be more likely to put it down to the fact that it's a new plant and still growing roots and settling in. Since they are relatively new, and if you are getting the kind of droughty conditions that the northeast is, they may need some water. Check soil moisture with your finger, and water slowly and deeply as needed.

I've had mine since 2009. Tried summer (August+September), winter, spring pruning. Most "pruning" has consisted of cutting the old blooms off and that's it. Do you leave your spent blooms on all winter Babs? I'm assuming you do...

SWG, yes, I do leave on the dried blossoms for their winter interest, but then most years I trim them off before flowering. This spring I ended up sick for a while and didn't get to it. It doesn't seem to make a difference in the blooming for me. I don't do any other pruning of mine - I planted it where it can grow full size.
