uses for tannin-rich water?

I strained the leaves (mostly maple) out of a trash can in which they'd steeped in snow and snowmelt over winter and now the can is half full of thick, nearly black water. My wife is going to try some for dyeing cloth. What can I do with the rest? Are tannins any good for the compost or for watering shrubs or small trees without harming them? Any other uses?
