The part of the door frame that is visible in the room should be painted the trim color. On the door, paint the side of the door you see in the room and the edge that is visible in the room when it is opened.

The color stops as far as you can see a flat surface facing you. Since the door probably opens into the bedroom, the bedroom trim stops at the edge of the flat side of the door stop molding facing you as you look out from the bedroom. I hope that helps! Its kind of hard to explain!.

Thank you. I still not sure I understand. If the door is opened and I'm in the bedroom looking out - will I see the inside of the door jamb as white? (I'm calling the door jamb the 5 or 6 inches between the trim of the bedroom and the hall way.) Or will I see 1/2 the door jamb as the bedroom trim color and 1/2 the hall way white color? Sorry - I looked everywhere for a picture and never found any.

I looked for something to demonstrate this too, the above wasn't much help. When you look out from the bedroom, the paint for the bedroom trim should stop at the door molding edge that stops the door from swinging all the way through the opening. If looking at the door casing from the inside at a square angle from the inside trim you will see only the bedroom color, moving to a more diagonal position (into the doorway) will show both the inside and outside trim colors. I will keep looking for something to show this in diagram if I can.

I've always painted what you can see with the door closed the same as the hall trim. The rest I painted the room trim color.

What is there is no door....just a transition to small hallway for example? That is my case.

Same place as above. You will see the color from the other room but it looks much better to stop the paint colors on the door jamb rather than any where else. That's the way experienced painters have done it for years. To try to continue the room color into a small hallway would lead to what? Painting the whole door jamb the room color? Then would it stop on the door trim? Definitely not professional looking.
