Pansies are not a favorite of mine although others like them. They drop there seed and germinate quite readily in the cool temperatures of spring. I'm not a big fan of self seeding plants unless they do it sparingly. I dislike having to pull out dozens of seedlings I don't want

How are your achimenes holding up? I've always wanted to try them but never see them for sale. When I lived in Texas you would see them as container plants for the summer but I think they were pass alongs rather than something picked up at the nursery.

Thanks for asking! I am loving them! It was a slow start and I lost some in the spring. I bought the rhizomes (a few from Easy to Grow bulbs and a few from Kartuze. I have 2 pots of the purple ones from EGB and one smaller pot of a yellow one from Kartuze living now. The purple ones are amazingly healthy (although in early summer I was burning the leaves-put in a spot too sunny). This was my first year to grow them and i'd never even seen them before, and I'm so glad I did. Even the leaves are nice and I like the color and shape of the flowers. The shape of the purple ones are more like a petunia and the yellow ones are more like a snapdragon! I haven't even talked to anyone who's grown them except for you and another person who commented on here!

Well that settles it! I'm going to need to track a few of these down this winter. The only place I've seen them is as seed (which I have but can't sprout) and through McClure and Zimmerman.

I wonder if I should try the seeds again now that it's hot out...

Dbarron did you start yours from rhizomes? That red sounds beautiful! I will check it out! Where did you get your rhizomes or seeds?

Yes, I bought the rhizomes from David Harris (hybridizer) who lives about 100 miles from me..this spring. Google Dave's Violets for his website (probably not suppossed to link here..or used to not be allowed back in the Spike days). He definitely has some neat stuff, but won't shipping achimenes rhizomes till spring again. Looks like he has plants available for the growing season though.
