Help with living room

last modified: 10 years ago

Good afternoon! We moved in a a few years back, and did not have much to spend on decor, so kind of worked with what we had. Well, now I am slowly trying to make some changes. I feel the room feels smaller due to how dark it is. First, I have purchased the rug in photos. I plan on getting some white, green and navy, pillows etc for couch and a white throw for recliner and over the couch. The metal scroll work I love, it just seems so bare or out of place... ?? I don't know. I was wondering if putting a sconce on each side would help or small mirrors... or any other ideas? I included a picture of a MAYBE idea for each side. I do know the couch/recliner situation is a little odd. It is really all we can do at this time however.

Also, am tired of my cluttered over-bearing mantle. I have decided on most likely putting a white framed mirror over the mantle to make the room seem bigger and starting over. I do not know what size or shape? Any ideas? Also, I know it is important for a mirror to reflect something pleasing- which would be the bar wall next to the metal work at this time.

The wall to the right of the recliner is bare, which I planned on doing a collage of wall art (mostly canvases of wedding photos etc) but I am afraid it will again, be overwhelming.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, as I obviously need it! Thank you so much!

If more pictures are needed to show the room, I will be happy to take more.

    A little better?

leaps and bounds better! dont you agree!

try the recliner floating on the other side of the sofa rather than under window it will be at a better angle for tv watching too.

take down the valance over the window, automatic update

    remove the tree...

if you want to keep the iron piece there needs to be lowered.

great job! the rug looks more to scale now too!

Thanks I do agree! I'll try moving the recliner when I get home.

The curtains are going for sure just waiting on rug to see which direction To go.

was looking to replace tree with one of these... Thoughts?

sisal rug will be here this week or next week!

I have a large mirror with distressed white wood for over the mantel. I was thinking of doing the bare wall with my art and a shelf in the corner?

Thanks everyone so much for helping me!

    or a large standing mirror?

I have this mirror for above the fireplace.

I was also thinking a large standing mirror in the corner where the tree is? Thoughts?

Okay, thanks!! Any idea for the corner where the tree is?

I was definitely planning on clearing the mantle. Just the mirror. Maybe the candlesitcks or flowers. Was thinking of a boxwood wreath over the mirror, but I am afraid it may not be tall enough.

    Yes, kind of like this.

there is nothing wrong with empty space in a corner. leave it empty. the problem is the large bare wall behind the sofa. the mirror i just dont see, im still thinking you should set the iron work on the mantel to see if it fits. you really need more visuals on the wall behind the sofa.

Okay, so here's what I am thinking so far. Take off the valance from the curtains. Thinking the metal scrollwork can go over mantel or on smaller stand alone bare wall. Mirror over mantle. Then the wall behind couch make an art wall. I have these and other stuff I could out there

also, I ordered this lamp for the corner eventhough most of y'all suggested leaving it bare. If it doesn't work, I can use it in a bedroom.
    Thoughts?

Or should I do wall collage on this bare wall due to the couch and smaller images?

I was thinking of a large wall collage behind the couch, but some of the images in the cavases shown are smaller. Would that make a difference?

Well I have the mirror, metal scrollwork and wall collage and three different areas to put each. If I put the mirror begging couch I was going to put one of these on each side to make it no so bare

but really there's so many different scenarios I could do. If I do a wall art collage I would include those canvases which yes, are of my wedding plus additional stuff.

You have said repeatedly that you are concerned about areas that seem too bare. If you look at sample rooms that have been designed by pros, you'll see that they actually have just as much bare wall space and bare corners than your room. But their rooms look better.

The reason is that the things that are on the walls are more interesting. Sorry to be blunt, but your wall items are not interesting. By that I mean that I can glance at them once, and I have seen everything that there is to see. A mirror, some scroll work - these items do not invite the eye to linger. So the eye skips over them to the next thing, and although I've scanned the whole room it only took me a second and I am unsatisfied, visually. That's what you're interpreting as boring.

Get some real wall art with images that invite the eye to linger on the items. It doesn't need to be expensive but it needs to be the right size for the item that it's over, and it needs to have color or images that take me more than half a second to "see". Not gallery walls of photos, something big and interesting.

No worries on being blunt thankyou! I am trying to do more boring because throughout my house I have been told it is too busy. As for the "gallery walls of photos"... sorry- they are my wedding photos and they are important to me and I would like to display them. Boring for you- maybe, but not me or my guests. I was going to include different things in the wall collage such as art as well as photos. Maybe an old clock, small mirror, canvases with writing, art- etc.

The 3 canvases I have so far:

    2 of 16x20

    1 of 16x24

    Maybe include this as well.

not sure of wall dimensions at this moment....

    Just different items. Example:

yes, I was thinking something like the second photo!

Can you recommend an app or website that helps you with dimensions etc of designing a wall gallery?

You have been so helpful, ideahound! Thank you!! Now to decide which wall lol. I am so indecisive. I am receiving both rugs tonight, so I am excited about that!

The design on the wall looks a bit out of place. I would suggest putting pictures of the family on the walls. It'll add a bit more warmth to the space. I think the rug is perfect, and your couches look very comfortable so I don't think they need any changing.

google "gallery wall" lots of diy tips there.

put the iron piece on that smaller wall near the hall and anchor it with a side table or console table of sorts.

do not think of using small photos, think a bit more grand on your scale. at least 8x10

Only one came in. So hopefully tonight I will get the other and layer them where they belong

Yes, I ordered a sisal rug with beige border in 9x12 and that will go under this medallion/scroll rug. I have only ordered 2 navy and white pillows so far. Wanted to wait and see the rug in person.

Just read all of the posts and suggestions. I can't wait to see your finished product. Please be sure to update this thread! :-)

the curtains are distracting you lol. no its not too much, its a matter of just doing enough. can the other table lamp go at the opposite end of the sofa for balance?

the collage pictures are awesome ...

ok, what is that white thing leaning by the door, i have one and i have no idea what it is for LOL!

Haha it goes up under the door knob for extra security. If someone was to kick in the door, they would not be able to.

    no way hahahaha...nice ty

Well put the mirror over the mantle. A little unsure. reflects a ceiling

Disregard the mess in the house. And that frame on the left wall- that's coming down lol.

Maybe turn it the other way leaning against wall with wreath over it?

What would it reflect if you hung it about 8 inches above the sofa? Then it would be lower on the wall so it might reflect your nice fireplace. You wouldn't ever be sitting down and looking up at the mirror, you'd be walking past so that might be better than the view you have now sitting on the sofa looking up at the mirror. If you put your scroll work over the fireplace, you might even see that in the reflection which would also look good. Then your collage could go on the smaller side wall. You might prefer that because people can stand closer and see the smaller pictures, which is harder to do if the collage is over the sofa.

Mirrors can be harder to work with than pictures of the same size, because of the reflection.

The TV haha. I may just lower the mirror and put the wreath over it and do some large art over the sofa

yes it does not work there........and if it did the other way would be better.

i could see putting it on the small wall near the hall way with a table and a lamp...

Yes, I thought about that- however that hallway is too narrow for a table with a lamp :(

If I do large wall art above the sofa, and lower the mirror it would most likely reflect the artwork?

The room feels uninspired and cold. So, I would add some character. I would first start with hardwood floors (the tile feels cold). I would get some clean-lined furniture and get rid of the scrolly art. Next I would get rid of the dark window coverings and get something lighter on the windows. You need to add light in that room.

Have you considered this slight adjustment to your arrangement of furniture? It moves the sofa away from the window a bit, but moves the lounger direction so it faces the door/window and doesn't block the hall. It's a tweak of downbytheriver's original suggestion. I show the mirror as the grey thing behind the sofa. It might give you more room in the hallway area than you have now.
