BTW, I don't know where you are located but this lovely flower is unfortunately classed as an invasive species in some states so care would be needed to keep it from spreading.

I would second floral's comment about invasiveness at least here in NH. I planted some of this 15 years ago, but when I realized that it didn't have the scent of the annuals and that it was the plant I saw around old farms that had taken over literally acres of fields, I pulled it. It self-seeds vigorously and is tough to pull out completely; I have a few sprouts every year near where I planted it originally that I pull, even after 15 years.

I live in northern Ontario and I didn't know anything about self seeding. My neighbour has had 1 vine for at least 6 years and it has never self seeded. Before I bought the seed I tried growing seeds from her plant for a couple of years and none germinated. The seed was gathered when the pods turned brown both years so if it was viable it should have germinated. What it gives up in scent it gives back in flower size and my allergies thank them for being scentless. I love them. It does have a tap root and like dandelions it will come back if you don't get the whole root

Perennial sweet pea has been cultivated in the U.S. since the early 1700s, so it is more native than any of us.

This reminds me to plant out the red-flowered L. latifolius I started from seed in pots over the winter.
