I might be wrong - probably am wrong - but if I am not wrong then it is the first stage of that bastard (sorry) Bermuda Grass or what I call (with a few other adjectives thrown in) Couch Grass.

As you know, Bermuda Grass/Couch Grass has rhizomes and stolons and creeps over the soil and under the soil and any way it pleases to infest all of everywhere. But it also has seed, and this seed, when young, produces grass that looks like that in your photo. When it gets older, it starts to give its true identity away by starting to produce what look suspicioously like rhizomes/stolons. Because they are.

Even my mother - a weed nut - was fooled. We studied the suspect carefully. Took me ages to finally declare it guilty.

May I suggest you pull it up while it is young? I have it too, and of course its more mature self. Every now and then I declare war and set to with various implements and parafernalia (sp). I can feel the urge returning.

Newspaper/cardbourd in thick, overlapping layers covered in mulch (to keep it in place, render it sightly and to block light) works extremely well. Takes a long time, and you need to cover the whole area, but is a good healthy way for all concerned. If you want, I can find a link somewhere I think.

That might possibly be Couch Grass, aka Quack Grass.

Now I am thinking that it isn't couch grass.

I pointed out to my OH yesterday the 'young' couch grass in the side yard, and he reminded me that it's been there for at least ten years. And it has. So I am wanting to know what it is too.

We had a lovely sunny winter's day yesterday and I spent a lot of time getting rid of couch grass out the front. I can feel that I am on a mission again.
