I agree with Floral that it looks more like a Mahonia than a holly (Ilex). Location always is useful.

It's definitely not a holly, and floral is right, as usual. Mahonia fremontii has yellow berries, while the other varieties generally have blue ones, so that seems a likely ID.

They can also be red. And yellowish or red fruits are not peculiar to Mahonia (Berberis) fremontii. There is more than one southwestern desert Mahonia species, of which M. fremontii is an example - if the shrub asked about here is not actually that particular one, it is a related kind. One thing that does set M. fremontii apart, that could be easily checked in the case of the example shown is that its fruits are dry and inflated.

It's quite hard to see but the leaves are pinnate, Caldwell, which means it isn't an Ilex. As I said above, it is not any plant I have ever seen myself, so M fremontii was only a suggested starting point.

And we still don't know where this thing is growing.
