I would like to buy two comfortable (for TV watching) sofas. I was originally thought I would by a sectional but I think two sofas arrangedvin an "L" shape would be better. the room is 9.2 wide (the room is wider beyond the fireplace) by 15' long . the furniture in the picture is the previous owners. I was thinking of a transitional or MCM style. I want a change from my usual traditional style do you think those styles could work in the room I will attach a pic of the couch I liked thanks

You can mix styles, carefully, but with those beams and fireplace, it might be quite the challenge. Didn't see pictures attached? I would like more pictures of spaces especially adjoining rooms. Everything needs to work in concert.

ok I will attach more pics the kitchen is next to the living area. the other pics are to give an idea of the vibe of the house the furnishings are from previous owner's real estate listing. I will be in the house in august. I want to have a plan so I can get to work right away. also, the walls are all painted an off white. I think I will keep the walls all the same. I may choose a warmer off white because the color on the walls has cool undertones

What a great place. A lot of wood. I think MCM would work pretty well because it has wood features, but styling is lighter and simpler in general. You could do shabby chic too. That would be amazing. The place is so unique you will have fun for sure. I think I would wait on painting. The walls probably help reduce overall gold of woods. Enjoy.

Thanks. I think shabby would work too. I don't like skirts or rolled arms. So much to think of. Would you T agree that all the walls should remain the same neutral color?

I would. The simpler the look the more cohesive this will be. You don't need (or would I want) ruffles. A chic shabby chic is in my mind. Clean lines, slipcover look sofa. A white washed mirror. I need to find some photos for you to visualize.

Although your fireplace is brick, I think a simple look would be great. Whites, creams, linens, would brighten it up a bit, some Swedish influences would be nice, the light blues, etc. Kind of an eclectic mix but keeping it "friendly".

Thank you everyone for your comments and pics. I loved them all. I think white slipcover should be perfect. I love the turquoise and the blue colors. Do you have any suggestions for sofa brands? I am looking to maximize my setting with two of the same of as arranged in an "L" shape. Something comfortable for tv watching.

I was at ikea a couple of weeks ago and bought the brusali tv stand in the white finish. Looks good. I checked out the couches. The only thing that makes me nervous is I have read on garden web forums that the frames do not last. Do you have any experience with any of the ikea couches? They look good in the store.

This armchair at Ikea is very comfortable and comes in other fabrics.

There is a lady on Houzz that said she has had her ektorp for ten years and is still happy. I have not had one myself.

I have read the washable slipcovers are a big plus with the ektorp. I have to go back and look at them more closely. Thanks.

Ikea sofas will last forever if you tighten up all the screws every year or so. If you have the budget I'd buy a couple of different slipcovers so you can change with the seasons or save a set to replace in a few years. (Ikea always seems to discontinue a month before I need them.)

I understand the need to stretch a budget, but for a main piece of furniture I recommend solid, kiln dried framed furniture. Not sure where you are, but I would search for good built sofa, and stretch my dollar with less expensive chairs that could be replaced when budget allows.

I agree about the quality. What do you think about two sofas as opposed to a sectional? I can't decide.

Two sofas, or better yet, a sofa and chairs will be way more flexible than a sectional, especially in a room that's not overly big. As for quality, Ikea is a good bet if you're on a budget and/or don't plan to keep the furniture that long. And I have sat in every Ikea chair and can attest to their comfort. That is one thing they do well.

I like one sofa and two chairs for this living room. Don't overcrowd. But, you have to decide what your needs are. The pictures with previous owner furniture I think was sofa and love seat and it looked crowded to me. You will typically only get 2 people on sofas no matter how long. Just the way people are. So one comfy sofa 2;2 chairs. Either way in this space you can seat 4 people routinely. If you have to seat more a small bench in front of fireplace could work for occasional extra seating.

Thank you. I was worried about the size of the space. The room is narrow. I will make a floor plan and try some different layouts to come up with the best solution. The previous owner has the tv. Next to the stairs on the side of the fireplace. I think I will try and figure another spot for that. Any suggestions. I will have to get a electrician to move the cable.

Patty, if you want help with your furniture arrangement--and TVs are often hard to locate in a room--give us photos of the space from all four directions. Also, don't be in too much of a hurry to buy furniture until you have all your measurements. It's a good idea to take painter's tape and tape the outlines on the floor so you can see how things relate to each other and make sure you have plenty of walk space.

I took a second look at your first photo and it looks like the TV is in a good place, but all the seating is pushed to the far end of the room. Ideally it would be centered on the fireplace/TV wall which is your focal wall here.

Patty, depending on what the wall to the left of the fireplace looks like (and the wall to the right as well), the TV might be mounted on an articulating arm so it can be pulled out to view. As it is now, the room looks terribly unbalanced, but I'd want to see it from all angles before I'd decide what goes where.

I actually have two IKEA Stocksund sofas in an L. I have the sofa size that is in between the love seat and the three seater. It's a perfect size to stretch out on but is compact enough not to overcrowd the room. They are comfy, stylish and the slipcovers are a big bonus.
I haven't had them very long so not sure how they hold up but I would rather not be married forever to an expensive high end couch.
