Nice, nice, real nice. What kind of spacing do you use? I am considering upping my beds to 8 x 8, hoping to get size like yours.

Dutch - This was my second year growing garlic and learned from my errors last year. All cloves were planted 8" apart and in raised beds. It was a lot easier to amend. I think I overdid it and grew too much! Btw thank you and many others for all your posts. They are extremely helpful to a new garlic grower.

Only the second year and it looks like you got it down already. Good job. I have been using 6" spacing, but now for sure this fall it will be 8" grid. There is something about garlic that is almost cult-like, but in a real nice way! I certainly overdid my planting last fall, but I have enough coworkers in my department that they took the surplus.

I have even started a garlic journal so I can remember everything I did rights and wrong. Lol. It is a cult.

Great harvest Mary...you are doing very well and much better than my second year harvest.

Previous to this year (last fall's planting, )I used 6" grid spacing in my raised beds and last year had some neck rot problems that I attributed to the overly wet spring and also possibly lack of airflow due to intensive planting.

Last fall I used 6" spacing within the rows and 9" spacing between the rows hoping that the extra room would allow better airflow, sun penetration to the soil surface, drainage, and root space. The extra room seems to have done the trick as I got my best harvest ever this year. I am probably going to cut the spacing between rows down to 8" this fall and am thinking about increasing the spacing in row to 7".

Yea, I am torn on the spacing this year. I have 3 4x8 beds planed for a total of 96 sq. ft. allocated. I may experiment and use different spacing in each bed. It won't be too scientific though because the garlic varieties will be different in each bed.

My beds are easily accessible on all side so it not too bad at planting 8" all around. Each bed was planted with only one variety. Talk about impatience in June waiting to harvest. Garlic and shallots are curing. This was the first year with French Red Shallots. They were really big at harvest. I give a lot of garlic away. Plan to make powder as well.
