As was the case before, all of these plants are in desperate need of repotting and fresh soil. The nursery was actually closed today for cleaning. Since I drove allll that way, they let me in while they transplanted, repotted, fertilized, etc. They have a HARD, HOT JOB! I felt like I should've tipped them for letting me in and allowing me a "behind the scenes look", but I bought 7 plants. Thats enough tip!

Katrina, what a HAUL!!! I so enjoy seeing what you find on your acquisition excursions. Amusing how you sweet talked your way in on a day they were closed, LOL. But really, Saturday, cleaning day? Sheesh!

I'm looking forward to hearing the possible ID's of what the unknowns are. I'll take door number 2 and guess subspicata on the NOID below canaliculata. Mufasa and Simba are a superb example of masoniana, lucky you. And that bat!!! Gorgeous. Love the spoons too. You find the best Sans....

I would have bought the last one as well! But then I don't have to worry about husband's eye strain from a MAJOR roll on that one....Oh to be a fly on a wall....

Ha! I can't wait to show him a picture of it. I think he secretly likes my plants. He'll call from Lowe's sometimes to see if I need soil or perlite. Aaand we're talking greenhouses for winter. Or could be he just wants to make sure they stay outside!

Guys, this place really is something else. I'm not into other plants, so I dont really venture far from the Sans, but they have so many pretty colorful plants. Its like a Garden of Eden. And today I got to see where they propagate. They had a good bit of the thick leaved Sans in a "hoophouse". There were floating flowers (not sans), all kinds of lilies, and plenty I've never seen before. Broms, croton varieties...so much stuff.

I love going to nurseries like that, you can enjoy all the different plants there - most without having to bring them home and care for them yourself! Sometimes when I'm having a bad day I just go to a nursery and I'm happier for it.

Nice haul Katrina! They are all really nice looking sans but my favorite is the dark one with the red edge.

Idk how I'd have gotten that last one home. I have a Buick Regal. Stegosaurus is definitely too tall...even if I put him on the floor. And with the 2 fans growing that way, they just would not have fit. MAYBE if I laid the back seat down and lay the plant on the flat side. Idk, that thing is huge. I'd need hubs' truck for sure! I can't imagine owning him, lol.

Btw, when I showed hubs the Stego pic, he said wow. That thing is crazy big!

OMG they ARE purple, just like my little pups - yeah, you got yourself a fine & fertile masoniana, now you need half a wine barrel to contain all of it. So, is your beloved going back for the Stegosaurus with his truck? That plant is so yang (macho) it could be his contribution to the Snake Pit.

I was so excited to find those 2. I love all pups, but purple? Man...the dark leaved NOID has a tint to those pups as well.

I can guarantee you my husband will NOT be going get Stegosaurus! He'll help me dress the Pit, but he won't contribute to its members.

That's a good haul Katrina, too bad that nursery is so far away or I'd be getting in my truck right now. I'll definitely be stopping by on my way to see my daughter in San Antonio though, haven't been there in years and I'm overdue to make the 1100 mile trip. I'll let you know ahead of time and maybe we can meet there, that'd be a fun visit for me.

Your Mustafa is masoniana as everyone is saying.

How tall and wide is the biggest leaf on the one that is possibly canaliculata? If it's 2 feet x 5/8 inch or less it could be that species.

Your big bat is the species hallii aka Baseball Bat.

I doubt it. The first flowers came from the carboniferous period, much much later. There were no insects during the jurassic period

I was going to say that the all-green sans with the red edge looks like Malawi Midnight, but looking at the number of leaves on the rosette, I'm not sure now. I count seven leaves on the big rosette, but Katrina, are there multiple plants in the pot that look like one large rosette??

Malawi Midnight should only have a few leaves per plant, subspicata can have up to eight.

Also, do the leaves narrow down to the rhizome with no petiole, or is there a narrow petiole before it attaches to the rhizome. A petiole might indicate subspicata, no petiole would be more consistent with Malawi Midnight.

The 'ehrenbergii-types' confound me, robusta, ehrenbergii, rhodesiana all look similar to me in immature stage.

The spoon sans is another difficult one. Is there any color on the petioles or just dark green? What is the length of the leaves? Any banding on leaves or are they solid green?

Ok Russ, I poked around some more and I won't have difinitive answers on the dark green one till I repot it next week. It's just too packed and potted low in there. Cant even get decent pics. There are definitely alot of leaves on that large rosette. There is a smaller one in there with at least 5 leaves. There seems to be a short petiole. From what I can feel, there are at least 4 plants in there. Looks like a fast grower because the current pups are farther out the hole and I see new ones in another hole.

The spoon has light banding on the pups that fades as they get older and is more visible on the backs of the leaves and in sunlight. On the largest growth, The leaf itself is about 4 inches with a petiole at 3 inches. There is no purple or anything, just green.

I couldn't take it anymore! I just HAD to see inside Dark Leaf's pot. It was bulging all over. I cut the pot off and here we have it. Poor thing is dying for a new home with fresh soil.

Your swimmin' in plants from that pot, Katrina! It looks like every plant has only a few leaves each, not eight as it looked in your earlier pics. If this is the case, only 3 or fewer leaves per offset, I'm sure your sans is Malawi Midnight which is a nice score as it's still not a very common sans.

Here's an update on Mufasa's pups. They're really growing fast. He deserves a pot of honor, but I still haven't found just the right one yet. Gladly, the pups don't seem to mind.

Scroll up to the original post and see just how much this guy has grown! I'll be repotting him in the clay pot later today. I'm so pleased with the obvious growth of all the ones I got that day.

Look at how big Simba is now! And there are pups all over. I saw them under the dirt when I repotted him, but it's always nice to see them break ground. This masoniana is just crazy!

The plain masoniana species is one of my favorite sans. Katrina I love the pattern and size of the leaf in your pic. I think the two creases are unusual, not sure what's going on with that. Do the other leaves have these creases?

I see 1 crease in another pup coming up. All the other pups and old leaves are smooth. I noticed a few leaves of my Jaboa/Aubrytiana and a plain trifasciata have the creases also. Hmmm.?.?.

I wonder if the creases were caused by crowding before you got them and repotted.

Hmm that's a thought Barb. Idk...

I've had a sans or three with folds and creases in the leaves, I don't know what causes them. But I think it would be unusual if every leaf on a plant had them. I would think it'd have to happen while it's underground and just emerging, when the leaf is softer.

Yes, as I looked back at pics, I noticed that particular pup was always folded and tight up against the pot. Not rolled as they normally are. All the new one are normal. With the exception of the pup with just 1 crease. So interesting. I think at some point someone here had a leaf with a crease. I'll look for it when I get a minute.

Might have been Stush that had the other one with creases.
