Help, narrow and small..

Hi, hoping to get help.. before we get more furnitures in.

Please excuse the mess.

Our house opens right to the living room..

There's an empty space once we enter the main door.

the dining area, the wall we would renovate to and open space kitchen.

We want to have more seating, and not have an awkward space as well...

how to resolve this? Please help

(scooch the couch and loveseat ahead a couple inches, they look like they've been scolded not to step on the rug. i think even tho there will be an inch less space between seating and coffee table it will look less crowded.)

then you can add a patterned chair in the left rear, at a diagonal.

Do you know how to measure and draw a floor plan on 1/4" graph paper? It will give you a better idea of how things will fit in your rooms. 1/4" = 1 foot. Or you can just place the big things first and try the smaller things in several places over the next few weeks. Sometimes you just have to live in a place for a while before you finalize your furniture arrangements. Then you can choose an accent color and use it in accessories in each area to unify the rooms: a rug at the front door, a few pillows (same color, different patterns), an umbrella stand near the front door, a soft throw on a sofa or chair, art for the walls, a lamp base, and some table-top accessories. Little by little.

This is an awkward layout. The rugs are too small in both rooms and make them feel even narrower. In the living room, try a much larger rug, place the sofa on the end wall, the loveseat under the mirror and that should leave room for one chair set at an angle or two small chairs side by side across from the loveseat. An upholstered bench would also work for extra seating.

While your ceiling lighting is interesting, it is still just ambient light to help you see how to get into the room in the dark. If you can, put it on dimmers, and add some more intimate lighting like table and floor lamps. Try a floor lamp in the corner where the plant is and bring the plant out to the other end of the sofa. For the other sofa, use a table and lamp on the end near the open space. Since the open space IS your foyer, dress it that way. Float a table in the center and you can add some seating if you like. Use it for a game table or just a decor statement. Anchor it on a large rug and you'll fill the space visually. The other two rugs are too small to use. The one under the dining table will have to be large enough so the chair legs remain on it even when pulled out for dining. The one in the seating area should slip under the front 1/3 of the sofas and extend past their ends by a foot.

Thank you all for your advices, will change the rugs soon. And get bits and pieces of more things to fill. Might change lighting as well. Please leave more advices if anyone has anymore. Many many many thank you. Really appreciate it.

Fillers are better when large sized. Otherwise it can start looking cluttered. Simple, fewer and bigger works better than complicated, many and smaller.
