Whatever it is, it is nothing serious enough to treat for!! Insects, both good guys and bad guys, abound in our gardens and it is unrealistic to expect plants to grow without some blemishes. Treating for insects unnecessarily just reduces the incidence of natural predators that keep things in balance. I would just monitor the plants to make sure things don't escalate but I doubt you have anything to worry about. Along with patience, tolerance is a gardener's best skill :-))

the garden is not Disney .. so its never perfect ...

if your shrub or plants are getting nearly denuded of leaves.. that is the time to think about eradicating things ... then what gal said above ...

there is a very active hosta forum ... that might be very minor slug damage .. go out at night.. and see if you can find any ...

Thank you for the responses. Obviously, I didn't give a detailed enough question and words were added in between the lines... I didn't say I was hauling out the Sevins or any other chemical at this point.. I didn't say I wanted a "Disney" landscape. All I wanted to know is what could be eating my plants and to know how to deal with whomever was the culprit - if it needed dealing with now or in the future - and the best chemical or natural remedies. Slugs is what I was thinking, but wanted to know if I was missing any other possible pests. Please don't assume all people are dumb.

Besides the ones mentioned, I've had some grasshopper damage this year ... I've seen the little buggers at work. Your 2nd and 4th pics look like my damaged leaves from them (ragged edges). They always recover fine, but it is annoying!

I very much doubt it is slugs or snails. Although they adore Hosta, they would have to be absolutely desperate to try Rhododendron. They like soft tender growth.

Probably grasshoppers or some kind of caterpiller.
