Kitchen update underway!

Since it will be a few years until I can afford to do a full remodel of the kitchen, I decided to do a face lift (of the kitchen, not of me, lol).

A fresh coat of paint in a cheerful color, new curtains, both in the eat-in area and over the sink, new kitchen towels (that actually match!), burner covers, and some wall art--reproductions of vintage tin signs--plus creating a small coffee station.

That's it--no new appliances, countertop, sink, or cabinets. Just a refresh.

Cost of the facelift:

$237 at Ace Hardware for primer, two gallons of paint, and all painting supplies (I had zero painting supplies to begin with).

$56 at Amazon for eight vintage tin signs, reproductions.

$35 at Amazon for two sets of cafe curtains.

$20 at Amazon for hooks to hang things.

$300 for labor to a lovely young couple I hired from Craigslist.

TOTAL: $348 if I could DIY, $648 with labor

What I didn't get due to finances but wish I could have: an area rug for under the table in the new colors. The one I have is OK and doesn't clash, but still... And a couple of new kitchen chairs. Ah well, some day.

Signs have all arrived. Both sets of curtains have arrived. I need to iron them before hanging. Joy and I still need to paint the wood knobs for the cabinets. Kitchen has been scrubbed with TSP, taped, and half is primed. Other half to be primed tomorrow.

When I do the reveal, I'll note exactly what paints and colors I used. I can say the primer is Kilz and it's oil based. Paint is Valspar,.

Hi Sunnysmom! Thanks for asking! The kitchen is almost done. The walls are painted, the signs are up. I got really cute towels, wash cloths, and matching placemats from the dollar store. New burner covers for the range. New cafe curtains on one window, and I'm thinking of no curtains for the window over the sink. So what's left is that I'm going to distress my tabletop and two chairs in a kind of whitewash. And when I get paid in September I'm going to get an area rug, two actually--one for under the table and a small one by the sink. I'm also going to get two retro 50's diner chairs in yellow.

I think it turned out really well. :-) Joy and I are going for a country cottage look, inside and outside. I think my little white & yellow coffee shop kitchen fits the theme really well. It's not the $50,000 white on white, granite everything, humongous island with appliances from Italy and Sweeden, but it's cute, cozy, and cheery! I love it. :-)

Hi,

Congrats on the progress. I am looking forward to seeing your reveal and hope you post some before/after pics and info on how you do the table. I tried chalk paint a few years back and it just did not work out well for me.

We are still in an apartment and praying we get closed this month on the modular we want to build. I posted some pics in the building a home forum asking for color suggestions. If all works out we should be in our home by Thanksgiving.

I miss having projects... took apart my closet and started rearranging the components this weekend : )
