We have sugar, red, and amur maples all over the place here, and I'm pretty sure it's not one of those. If any, *maybe* Amur. Try the UBC maples forum. There are some folks there who seem to know every species out there--

Of the common kinds this would in fact be red maple (Acer rubrum) - sugar maple was a mile off, as far as it goes. The other familiar one that looks like sugar maple is Norway maple - these both produce the Canadian flag type of maple leaf, and not leaves like your tree.

Red maple is related to silver maple and crosses with it to produce Freeman maple. Named clonal selections of this intermediate hybrid are very frequently used for campus, mall, parking lot and street plantings, often have flame-like or otherwise comparatively narrow and erect crown shapes.

It looks like amur maple to me, the leaf stems should be red if for red maple
