Thomasville cabinets - overthinking?

I am looking at Thomasville cabinets from Home Depot. They seem very nice and the sale through the end of the month is great. There is one thing bugging me.

These are framed cabinets, and the frame on the sides and tops is fine, but I think that little lip on the bottom would bug me. My last two houses have had tract home builder grade framed cabinets (from the 80s), but the bottom shelf doesn't have the frame going past the shelf. This seems like a cleaning issue when the salt or garlic powder spills and you can't easily wipe it out.

Am I overthinking this and it is really no big deal? Custom cabinets will be about $6,000 more (because of the Home Depot sale). I should have gotten an estimate over the phone, but instead I walked into the shop to talk to the cabinet maker and his cabinets are works of art and because they are frameless, no little lip of frame!

I've never even noticed the little "lip" on the bottom of my framed cabinets and had to go look to see if my cabinets even had it (they do). I have that ribbed, plastic shelf "paper" on the bottom of my cabinets, so that can just be replaced as needed if anything should spill. And all the other shelves besides the bottom one don't have the "lip" so it doesn't affect those those. I also keep most of my food items in a pantry with roll out shelves and all of those shelves are pretty much boxes, so they all have a "lip" around the entire perimeter! To me, it is non issue. And certainly not an issue worth $6,000.

First, are you sure you're comparing apples to apples? Does the Home Depot price include installation? Is the custom guy doing anything else to increase the cost (super susan vs lazy susan, for example).

I have not received the final custom bid yet, just a ballpark. There would only be a $2000 difference if the HD ones were not on sale. Definitely not apples to apples. The custom ones are really amazing and he can fit more into my layout with a tight inside corner. Neither includes installation.

I have Thomasville cabinets, installed 10 years ago and the lip doesn't bother me at all. I don't even notice it.

If the only thing that concerns you is the "lip," that's one thing, but if there are a bunch of things about the custom cabinets that you prefer over the Thomasville cabinets, that's another thing. The "lip" alone is not worth a $6,000 difference IMO. "Really amazing" cabinets that far surpass the Thomasville cabinets might justify the difference. Home Depot is always running a "sale" ... one ends and another begins.

The installer with the custom company might be worth thousands! The guy that installed our custom cabinets had been with the company for 23 years. He called the shop to rebuild 2 drawer fronts, because he didn't like the way they looked (I never saw them). His attention to detail was impeccable. He double checked with me about pull placement, and showed me how to adjust the Blum soft-close hinges. He was the frosting on the cake of a terrific experience.

I Agree with Jellytoast - I've learned over the years not to jump on something just because it's on sale...there will always be another sale!

"The installer with the custom company might be worth thousands!"

According to the OP, installation is not included in either price.
