i have a secret

but after you see this, the cat...errr...dog will be out of the bag!

i have been on a list for years to receive a retired show dog from a specific breeder. carolyn bred the dog who won best of breed at westminster this year, a truly awesome accomplishment!!! ALL of her dogs are health tested to the max, as are all of the outside stud dogs she uses. "outside" meaning she does not keep a stud dog herself.

carolyn contacted me last week and offered me this girl...meet "Divine Acres Out of Paradise", call name Eden. eden is 3 years old and carolyn tells me she loves everybody and everything. we talked at length about 3 females in the same house but we are both satisfied that eden and my girls will become fast friends from the get-go. i am beyond excited about this girl!! at 3 years old and known to be healthy (good hips, thyroid, heart, eyes, elbows), she should be with me for many years to come.

since this opportunity has come up, i have wrestled with myself over and over and over again about taking her as opposed to waiting for another dane in need of rescue. this is a chance i will have only once as there are many people on her list. after losing samson at such a tender age, a dog i thought i would have for years and not just months, i have decided to take advantage of this opportunity to have a super well-bred dane. there will be other rescues in my future, of that i am sure. i just need a break from unhealthy dogs after losing 3 danes in less than 18 months.

eden is scheduled to be spayed august 5. it will be 3 weeks before she is healed so i will be getting her sometime in early september. i am only posting this here (not on facebook or anywhere else until she is here with us) because i can't contain my excitement!

hope you all approve! :)

LOL! i actually do have a little saddle that fits the danes. :D

decided it would be easiest to stay in a hotel near carolyn's place since i will have the girls with me. she has several intact girls that live in her house and i want to make the introduction as stress-free as possible. so, i have a reservation at a comfort inn for 8/20. she will meet me there with eden in tow, spend the afternoon, eden will spend the night with me and the girls and we'll head home sunday morning. i had to go through management to get approval to stay there with THREE great danes! haha!!

Nina, I'm so happy for you and all your girls! I think it's a great idea to get such a healthy girl...you've been through the mill with all of your loss and you need a break. I can't wait for all the pics to come...

i have been setting things aside that i want to make sure i don't forget to pack. i'm a terrible packer, even if i'm only gonna be gone a couple of days, i take enough for 2 weeks! my plan is to load the girls up friday and head 4.5 hours north and will spend the night with my girlfriend who i went to see over july 4th. she has 3 danes and all of our dogs get along great! this way, i will be able to get to wisconsin by noonish on saturday. depending on how tired i am, i may stay at her place on the way home sunday and finish the trip monday morning. i think it will be better for the dogs not to be cooped up in the van for hours and hours and i know my back will thank me! LOL

I just accept the fact that I'll forget something and be done with worrying:)

Best wishes for a safe and enjoyable journey!

hi everybody!!! we're finally home!!! had a wonderful visit with carolyn and learned so much doggy stuff from her!

eden is absolutely EVERYTHING i was hoping for! she is gorgeous, lovable, adaptable and nicely obedient although she wants to explore every nook and cranny of the farm so i have to keep a close eye on her until she learns her boundaries.

the dogs' first meeting went very well. we all went for a walk and then hung out in the hotel room, the dogs slept and carolyn and i visited.

on our way home! they pretty much slept for the entire 6 hour trip. we hit every rest stop on the way to stretch our legs and give myself a break. they attracted crowds everywhere we went! there must be a hundred pictures of me and my danes taken by complete strangers. LOL

i attached a lightweight rope to her collar just for a little security. she was very good about staying right with us and if she wandered very far, all i had to do was call her name and she would come bounding back.

I'm thrilled for you! She's beautiful and I can imagine how full of emotion, love and happiness you must be!

pigs were all new to her. it was hilarious, she danced and bounced up and down the fence and seemed utterly fascinated with the oinkers. i'll have to take my camera out tomorrow as i'm sure she will be excited again!

    wranglin' pigs is hard work!

and so typical of the breed, she loves a good sun bath!

i will have more as the days go by. please let me know when you get sick of seeing them! ;)

    Congratulations Nina!

Amazingly seamless transition--she certainly skipped the "adjustment" phase:)

I think you should change her name to "Perfection". What a joy to have her join your crew so seamlessly!!! I love the pictures and will never be tired of seeing those beautiful pups of yours!! Congratulations!

thanks, everybody! our first night together was stellar. i left her sleeping on the couch when i went to bed as i wanted her to choose her sleeping spot. i have no idea what time during the night but she joined us eventually. she is a HUGE snuggler! today will be spent just wandering around, learning boundaries, and filling the hummingbird feeders every hour! LOL

    waiting for breakfast...

Everyone here is enjoying your experience and your pups so much! Did she seem worried or confused at all? From the pix and narrative, it doesn't seem so. I guess she feels more comfortable because of the other dogs. Thank you for sharing this wonderful experience and remarkable dogs.

I agree, Socks, that having two already balanced and calm dogs to show her the ropes makes all the difference in the world. She really is beautiful and is a great addition to the clan.

i've had so much fun and enjoyment sharing this news with all of you! still haven't put it "out there" yet, will give it another couple of days but her transition here has been flawless. i often hear about the "honeymoon" period and i'm well aware of it having had several rescues over the years. however, i have never once experienced it with my danes. every single time i have brought a new dane into the fold, it has been perfect from day one! eden is no exception. she acts like she has been here her whole life! i'm sure you are entirely correct, susan, in that having well balanced dogs already here goes a long way. also, danes do so much better with their own kind. they seem to adjust much easier when there are other danes in the home.

she LOVES exploring and when she is intent on sniffing certain spots, she goes deaf. she got out of my sight while i was feeding pigs and i had a moment of panic but i called her name and she came trotting in from the alfalfa field. :)

    after breakfast nap. <3

thanks for indulging me! i have waited for this girl, literally, for years! carolyn said she had me in mind all along when she got ready to place eden because she knows how much i LOVE "needy" dogs. eden is perfect that way...if i wanna cuddle, she's all up in my face. if i'm busy, she is happy to just lay in the same room with me. :)

She is just beautiful! I love that "hundreds of people" have pictures of you and the three danes. And I never get tired of seeing your pictures and hearing how everyone is doing ... here's hoping the honeymoon period is permanent.

she asked for the keys. i couldn't say no. LOL

Is she the biggest of the three? I love her long legs and the way she crosses them. So ladylike. (Don't tell her my cat does that too.). She doesn't look like she's wondering when she's going home.

Do they shed a lot? Their coats look light. Do they get cold in the winter?

You have a perfect place for big dogs; it looks beautiful there.

susan, she is the tallest of the 3 by a couple of inches. as far as weight, she probably weighs the least because she is trim. destiny and olivia are both on diets. they (and i!!) packed on a few extra pounds over the long, hot summer!

they blow their coats twice a year, spring and fall. while their coats are very short, just due to their size the shedding is definitely noticeable. if they are outside in the winter for more than potty breaks, i do put winter coats on them. they LOVE playing in the snow!!

thanks! the farm is so pretty right now. we've had enough rain that the grass is very lush which is unusual since the soil is 100% sand. :)

People and dogs have put on a little weight at Chez Mimi this summer ;-(

It's been miserable, but finally, we have a break with temps in the mid 70'-80's.

We are hitting the pavement hard once the heat wave leaves for good!

christine, while this tickles me beyond words, it is pretty much what i expected would happen. great danes are just another whole different breed. i've had and i've been around a LOT of other breeds but these danes are so human-like, it's almost spooky!

even the rescue danes i have brought in over the years settled right into the pack. didn't matter if they were male or female, they just did. a lot of people who don't know danes told me i was taking a huge chance and i was even crazy to put 3 females together especially since my house is small but i didn't even hesitate nor did carolyn, eden's breeder. what is even more remarkable is that with eden being a show dog, she was not exposed to a lot of different dogs outside the show ring/grounds other than those she lived with. so for her to accept olivia and destiny as her instant family just blows me away. but then again, she IS a dane! :)

My neighbor next door just adopted an 11-year old Golden and I was thinking of your Danes and how well they are getting on already. I introduced my 2 dogs and he's so laid back! Everyone got along, and in fact, we took a little leash walk together yesterday.

No drama, just 3 dogs walking with their people.

that's adorable, nannygoat! hope all is well with you.

Everyone got along, and in fact, we took a little leash walk together yesterday.

that is the absolute BEST way to introduce dogs to each other. after walking for a while, let them do the butt sniff and usually, you're good to go!

    Very cute picture, Nanny!

Nina, I love, love, love the picture of all the different legs intertwined!! You should print and hang that! And the whole shot of the three of them is just precious!! You have the perfect setup for having these girls. How fun for them that they can lay there and watch the world go by!! Lucky pups!!

Nina are all 3 of your dogs Danes?

    Ninapearl thanked mamapinky0

yes, MM, i'd love to do that! maybe i can find somebody who can photoshop the t.v. remote out. LOL

mamapinky, yes all 3 are danes. while eden is a well-bred dane, destiny is a close second although she is average as far as conformation. olivia's parents were both great danes but poorly bred ones so she does not have the typical dane conformation but her lack of physical "type" is more than made up for by her dane personality. 'livi is as lovable as they come!

i think it's safe to say, the first episode of "as the dane settles in" has concluded. LOL
