Hi! I know it's a bit early to start planning for next year but my step dad is visiting in a couple weeks & I wanted to knock out all DIY's while he was here.

I have a 4"x11.5" plot in an urban garden lot. To the south is a three story townhome that creates shade but only later in the day. East, west, & north are basically open. I get full sun for the majority of the day.

A couple notes about my plan:

1. This is my first time square foot gardening

2. i am growing Heinz Super Romas right now & they seem pretty compact for being determinate. Should I flip the Super Romas & Indeterminate tomatoes (mini orange & brandywine).

3. I was planning on 1 plant per squarefoot unless otherwise noted.

4. Rhubarb & brussel sprouts were thrown in at the last minute cuz I had two open squares.

5. I would build a trellis that would run the length of my plot.

Am i completely out of my mind?

I would just check that your climbing plants wont over shadow the rest of the plants. Otherwise good luck.

It's never too early to start planning! I do the same thing. :) You may have trouble with the rhubarb in such as small space. After a couple years a well established rhubarb will generally will be much larger then the space there. Also, are your melon/winter squash vines allowed to trail outside the plot? Melons and winter squash want to travel quite a bit. If you have to stay within the community plot I'd suggest moving them back and training them vertically if you are dead set on having them.

Just be aware that when you plant tomatoes in such close quarters you will need to prune them heavily to keep them from overtaking the neighboring plants. I keep mine at no more than two stems per plant, while removing all suckers, and I plant them one per square foot and attach them to a trellis. Also, the leaves on squash plants are massive and will most assuredly shade out the surrounding plants within a foot of it, so I would plant shade loving plants next to the squash and remove all the leaves within a foot of the ground to help with air circulation. With that being said, I personally would give each squash plant, especially winter squash such as that pink banana, 4 squares per plant. I just planned out my square foot garden for next year as well, and as soon as I figure out how to load photos I can show you lol

@Valerie V @puzzle50000 Thank you! I've changed up my plan so many times, I'm on revision 4! LOL. I decided against the luffa squash and rhubarb and my pink banana squash seeds didn't sprout so I'm thinking of taking winter squash out of my plan altogether. Also, the soil in our community garden has this cucumber disease that kills cucumber plants (just learned that this off season from the city) so my cucumbers are going in a pot outside my townhome. That has free'd up a lot of space that I'm trying to figure out what i want to add! It's getting so close to planting I'm getting antsy!
